Caruso
Fred Rovella Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics to Fred Rovella's song "Caruso" tell a story of a man who sings of his love for a woman while standing on an old terrace overlooking the Gulf of Surriento. He embraces her after she had cried, and then begins to sing, his voice clearing as he does so. He tells her how much he loves her, so much so that it is now a chain that flows through his veins. He reminisces about seeing the lights in the middle of the ocean, thinking of the nights in America, but realizing it was just the lights of the ship. He feels the pain in the music and stands up from the piano, but when he sees the moon emerge from behind a cloud, it seems to make even death sweeter. He looks into the eyes of the woman, green like the sea, and suddenly a tear falls from his own eyes. He thinks he is drowning in that moment, but still sings of his love, the chain that flows through his veins.
The second verse talks about the power of music, how every drama is fake, and how with a little bit of makeup and mime, one can become someone else. But when two eyes look at you that close and that truly, they make you forget your words, confusing your thoughts. The man realizes how small everything can become, even the nights in America, seeing his life as just the wake of a ship's trail. But he doesn't dwell on the end of life; in fact, he feels almost happy as he starts his song again, singing of his love that flows through his veins like a chain.
Overall, the song is a beautiful tribute to the power of love and music, and the way they can lift us up and make everything seem brighter, even in the face of mortality.
