Formed out of the ashes of First Day Back, the St Albans, United Kingdom hardcore band they formed while still at school, Friendly Fires make razor-sharp post-punk that burns through the memories of all the dismal, skinny jeaned ‘80s revivalists you’ve been hearing these past few years. Sounding brittle, knotty and urgent, Friendly Fires are the real deal. With no fat or padding on them at all, their songs possess an elegant sparseness. As guitarist Edd Gibson notes: “The hardest thing I think is to know what to leave out, to know when something is enough.” But amongst all the stripped-back twists, there are also moments full of deep, blissed-out melodies. “I love lush, massive, tingly chords; the My Bloody Valentine sound,” says bassist and singer Ed MacFarlane.

How'd you mean?, What do you mean you're not coming by?
I called you later and you were outside
It always screams screams inside my head
Curtains closed you'd be beside my head
You were always down for it
Get in this getaway and we run from it
Get in this getaway and we run from it
You're giving me the coldest stare
Like you don't even know I'm here
Why don't we turn the leaf? Why don't we turn the
Why don't we turn the leaf? Why don't we turn the
You're giving me the coldest stare
Like you don't even know I'm here
Why don't we turn the leaf? Why don't we turn the
Why don't we turn the leaf? Why don't we turn the
What you've done, what you've done you can't keep inside
By the end of the night I'll help you confide
Cause I can see, see your sad self
Cause I can see you're not being yourself
Cause usually you're down for it
Can't hold back a smile when you try for it
Yeah, cause usually you're down for it
Can't hold back a smile when you try for it
You're giving me the coldest stare
Like you don't even know I'm here
Why don't you let me sing? Why don't you let me
Why don't you let me sing? Why don't you let me
You're giving me the coldest stare
Like you don't even know I'm here
Why don't you let me sing? Why don't you let me
Why don't you let me sing? Why don't you let me
Whatever done, However bad, Hold on hold on hold on
Whatever done, However bad, Hold on hold on hold on
Whatever it is, However bad, Hold on hold on hold on
Hold on hold on hold on, hold on hold on hold on
Why don't
you turn the leaf? Why don't you let me sing?
These lyrics of Friendly Fires's song Hold On suggest a sense of frustration and confusion within a relationship. The singer seems to be trying to connect with their partner, but the partner is unresponsive or cold. The repetition of the line "You're giving me the coldest stare, like you don't even know I'm here" emphasizes the feeling of being ignored or overlooked. Despite this, the singer attempts to offer support and understanding, saying "By the end of the night I'll help you confide" and "Usually you're down for it, can't hold back a smile when you try for it." However, the partner still seems distant and unwilling to engage. The line "Why don't you let me sing?" could be interpreted as a plea for a chance to express oneself and be heard within the relationship. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of longing for connection and understanding, and a frustration with the barriers preventing that connection from happening.
