Formed out of the ashes of First Day Back, the St Albans, United Kingdom hardcore band they formed while still at school, Friendly Fires make razor-sharp post-punk that burns through the memories of all the dismal, skinny jeaned ‘80s revivalists you’ve been hearing these past few years. Sounding brittle, knotty and urgent, Friendly Fires are the real deal. With no fat or padding on them at all, their songs possess an elegant sparseness. As guitarist Edd Gibson notes: “The hardest thing I think is to know what to leave out, to know when something is enough.” But amongst all the stripped-back twists, there are also moments full of deep, blissed-out melodies. “I love lush, massive, tingly chords; the My Bloody Valentine sound,” says bassist and singer Ed MacFarlane.
True Love

I walk the pavements back to mine alone
I keep on wanting your lies
As you live your life a moment just passed on by
I watch the lovers collide
And my envy ignited
I'd give it all just to feel what it's like
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
I check the figures
It feels like hope is lost
A photographic film I cut the cord
I keep chasing my lie
That you live your life a moment just passed me by
If I had luck on my side
I'd give it all just to have what they have
But it's never enough
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
Watch you fall through my fingers
Watch you fall into space
Watch you fall through my fingers
Watch you fall into space
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
All I want is to feel true love
In the song "True Love" by Friendly Fires, the singer feels a sense of longing for true love. They walk through the streets alone at night, guided by the repetitious streetlights that illuminate their path. As they walk, they see other lovers colliding and envy them for the passion that they share. The singer is consumed by the desire to experience that same kind of love, and they feel hopeless as they check the figures and realize that hope may be lost. They keep chasing their own lie that the person they desire has just passed them by in life.
The repetition of the phrase "All I want is to feel true love" emphasizes the desperation felt by the singer. They want nothing more than to experience the kind of love that they see others enjoying. The line "If I had luck on my side, I'd give it all just to have what they have" shows that the singer is willing to give everything they have to experience true love.
In the chorus, the singer watches the person they desire fall through their fingers and into space, further emphasizing the sense of longing and loss that they feel. Overall, "True Love" explores the theme of the search for true love and the heartache that comes with feeling like it is out of reach.
