Skin
Front 242 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stretch - sweat - pierce - lash
Choke - crush - strange desire to fly
Scream - fight not to scream...
Let's keep on working, man!...
Shadows in the heat
Weaving on the ground
Sparkle in the sun
Boil in the dark
Start to vaporize
Here comes that need to fly... to fly!
Keep on working, man!... keep on working, man!
Muscles in the dust
Figures in the light
Choking in the haze
Lashing at the heart
Hurt (desire to)
Fire (desire to)
Shout (desire to)
Burst (desire to)
Fly!
Keep on working, man!
Hate time - hard time - crush time - strong time

Scream - fight not to scream...
Let's keep on working, man!...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Skin" by Front 242 depict the physical and psychological effects of being in a state of intense work, whether it be labor or mental exertion. The opening lines, "Stretch - sweat - pierce - lash/Choke - crush - strange desire to fly" convey the bodily strain and exhaustion that comes with putting in sustained effort. The "strange desire to fly" suggests a need to escape the weariness and monotony of the work, to transcend the physical meat-sack and take flight.

As the song progresses, we see a progression from weariness to a kind of frenzied desperation, as the singer becomes increasingly consumed by the "desire to" do things like "hurt," "fire," "shout," and "burst." The refrain of "keep on working, man" almost takes on a cult-like quality, as though the only way to achieve that escape is to push through the work with a kind of feverish intensity.

The closing lines of the song, "Hate time - hard time - crush time - strong time/Scream - fight not to scream.../Let's keep on working, man!" speak to the cycle of work and exhaustion, in which time becomes an adversary to be hated, and screaming becomes a means of coping with the stress. The repeated urge to "keep on working" suggests a resignation to one's fate, although the charged and chaotic nature of the song's instrumentation could also be interpreted as a kind of rebellion against that same fate.

Incredible album that you just have to listen from the start to the end. It's like a story. Well like a book.

I love that album. Such a big pity that it never has been repressed on vinyl. The original version from 1991 is extremely expensive now.

Constantly Burning Fire

First time I ever heard this song I was in my car, it was on a local college radio station late at night, and it came on right after a really happy irish song. Needless to say I was captured - it influenced me deeply. The DJ never said who it was, and it wasn't until years later I stumbled upon this album.
