I've noticed, in regular photos, that folks who are less confident tend to make silly faces. This could be due to social influence from these thumbnails etc, but I think it can also be an escape, cuz when ppl view their pics they'll see a silly distortion and not a more true to form representation of how they look.

I think (and I'm including myself in this so I'm not above it all or anything) that a lot of people need to learn or relearn how to do a natural nice smile. I do closed mouth smiles and I tend to look/give off a “I feel uneasy” vibe. I think the pose has something to do with reflecting candid images. Having a picture with your mouth open is usually because you’re talking to someone, maybe at a busy party so you’re not even aware there is a camera around. You can possibly push this further and say it reflects older candid photos where there was much less variation in poses than today; someone was either aware there was a photo being taken and smiled, or they were busy doing something meaning their mouth might be open. Someone with a media studies degree can probably explain better but to me it seems like a pose to seem less like you’re doing a pose for a photo and more like you’re doing something with other people with is more attractive behaviour than taking a picture of your own face smiling while alone.

I think something that contributes to it is that a large minority of people (likely including you reading this) are less comfortable around superficial or “fake” people. We see these attributes of consumerism and obsession over media to be a sort of filler for a personality, for one. For another, nobody in the real world is going to be as exited as the people in these thumbnails advertise themselves as, and it makes you uncomfortable because they constantly seem to be obsessively engaged with whatever the subject of the video is when there is no way anyone could really care that much about this stuff.

Interesting... Could you please do a video on FEMALE expression of testosterone and how it shapes our face and expression? My understanding is that during our sexual peak (26-30) testosterone is higher than estrogen and contributes to feminizing features and attractiveness/behavior. I haven't been able to find many papers on the topic, but your team seems to be research gurus...so?

@notyourmom Ummm, I have a biochem degree... How can I rephrase it? Women make more testosterone than estrogen. Go look at hormone concentration charts in females by age. Testosterone allows us to be shapely and focused, as well as juggle a lot of balls in the air 😭. The decrease in testosterone is responsible for earlier sagging skin, when compared to men's, since testosterone builds thickness and structure.

Sexual Peak is about one's desire to have sex, to enjoy sex (ease of sexual function relates to hormone status), and belief that one is attractive... aka overall function as a sexual being.

Talk to your older female friends about their sexual experiences in their older 20s. It may be eye opening. IMHO, women start to demand better sex from their partners at this age, after many years of disappointing sex.

It's not just "low T men" that behave like children. It's men in general behaving like children. I think it's wrong to assume that testestorone levels or attractiveness are the most important factor here when it's actually age. The attractive guys shown in this video are all rather young looking, clean shaved etc. so we see it as normal for them to still behave somewhat childish. But grown men doing this (30+), that's just weird.

@Lily There is a reason why the terms child-like and effeminate are viewed as synonymous and was even used such as by the maker of the video. Women are clearly the more child like. Men, who are culturally not viewed as human beings but as human doings just aren't expected to behave like this.

Content creators who make these faces quite often spend most of their time simping to their followers (usually people who are attracted to dumb faces) and making the same dumb face over and over, until it's right for editing. It's a sign that the content isn't worth watching.

I've an intuition concerning the observation regarding the lack of soy-faces of color. This is a long-shot, and by no means provable, but here goes:
American Black culture has a similarly subconscious deep embedment regarding exaggerated smiles predating this topic. I refer you to the similarly ubiquitous lyrics of the hook of the O'Jay's classic tune "Backstabbers". Compare what is said about them wanting 'to take your place' when grinning 'in your face,' (which I always misheard, by the way, as 'want to dig your grave') to the point of the Russian proverb you mention.
Also, there is research about similar prejudice that found that Americans will believe that a man pictured in a bow-tie will steal. How would we test the hypothesis that a photo of a man-of-color sporting a shit-eating grin promises not goofy fun, but menace (and would therefore 'not work' as clickbait)?

I dunno if it even has anything to do with testosterone - I think it's just youtubers are stupid and think they need to look excited in a thumbnail, because it increases clicks, because "muh metrics (the only indication of their boss, youtube, saying they did a good job; so fear of the unknown as a content creator) say so", never mind that people who click aren't just part of some borg machine entity that responds to certain stimuli at all times and not others.

Viewers could get used to a youtuber being themselves and not having to smile idiotically - but youtubers are often concerned with the "first impression" as well, so it really is just dumb incentives. They want those fast and immediate clicks, rather than the clicks slowly building over time based on trust for actual content. Really, they become the fools because they submit to the youtube metric in that way, so it's oddly fitting.
