We also wanted to say that the Department of Energy (DOE) sets standards for washer water usage. Over the years, the amount of allowable water usage has been reduced. With washers using less water and energy, you will no longer see a wash basket full of water. Most washers are now programmed with load sensing to adjust water levels based on the cycle and load size, so the amount of water used will vary. @GE Appliances I have already tried to prevent mixing items where water concentration differences might make balancing the drum more difficult.
For example, I did notice that having a thick towel together with a bunch of t-shirts, that it raises the odds of an imbalance.
The unit fails to detect violent shaking half the time, which is rather disturbing. Clearly, a movement sensor isn't reliable!
But even a small load of just t-shirts ends up causing these out of control shakes!
It seems those hanging rods that has a buffering / shock absorbing function, isn't effective enough.
The various sensor based mechanisms that tries to gauge the situation, isn't accurate for it to work reliably.
It's really not a well designed product it seems.
So, all this complexity is found even on the cheapest washers now. This is really frustrating for the customer. Us customers want a no nonsense simple washer without any complex fanfare that will only end up breaking.
These newer washers won't last like 25 years like the previous generations do.
And is that perhaps the intent? To reduce the chances of having washers last 25 years? You won't admit this, but that's really what's going on, isn't it! Planned obsolescence.
Honestly, if I had any paths of influence, I would find ways to penalize you all. You and all the other manufacturers.
Sorry that this is not a friendly conversation, because I do not feel that you are on the side of the customer at all !

You may want to try adjusting the amount of clothing that you have in your washer as too much or too little can cause out of balance issues. I'm ready to trash the 1 month old GE washer we got, get the $10 metal recycling free, and get the Speed Queen.
I can't in good conscience sell this used for cheap, because I fear that the people I sell it to, will come after me.
If there was a way to sue GE that is not a terribly difficult process, I would.
I'm looking into consumer protection rights now.
Service guy did absolutely nothing other than watch it once, and low and behold, it randomly didn't shake the crap out of the room, and he left.
Store won't take it back because that is their hard policy. Will obviously never shop there again.
I hate GE with a passion. Made in Mexico garbage.
I am trying to talk as many people out of buying GE products from now on.
I'm going to spread videos of it doing its dangerous insane machine.
How DARE they pass off this crap, grrrrrr makes me mad !

Congratulations on your new washer! We'd love to help. There are two ways Deep Fill can be used:

Add a little more water: Press the Deep Fill button once before starting the cycle to add 3 gallons of water to the wash load. Once the washer has stopped filling, you can press it again to add 3 more gallons.

Full Tub Fill: Press and hold the Deep Fill button for 3 seconds to fill the washer to the maximum water level. It will fill to approximately 26 gallons

PRO TIP: You must hold deep fill for 3sec BEFORE you press the start button in order to get a true deep fill. If you press it once after you start the cycle, you only get the 3 extra gallons. (Think of it like add a garment feature). Also for this model shown GTW460 or GTW465 Deep fill will not work on the colors/normal cycle due to energy star regulations. If you do not care about water usage, I would highly recommend using the DEEP RINSE also under the options knob regardless of using fabric softener. This can sometimes help with out of balance loads too.

If you want the easy max fill cycle use BULKY ITEMS. This will default to the max water level but does have a slightly slower final spin speed.

Finally, if you want more water I would recommend not using precise fill. This setting is designed to sense the weight of the load and add water accordingly. In my experience you get more water using a load size of MAX or SUPER then holding the deep fill for 3sec before pressing start. You should hear a different chime.

Thank you for your Pro Tip. Your advice only served to convince me more and more that most of us who bought these washing machines were ripped off big time. I am 80 years old - a young 80 if I must say so myself heheh and I probably must. :). To literally jump through all the hoops you mentioned is utterly ridiculous! This is no reflection on you or your advice. Again I thank you for trying to help everyone on this site and give us some direction on how in the heck to use these new-fangled machines. I will reiterate that I love technology and have worked with it for over 30 years. But technology makes life easier not more complicated. Let me explain using the first two lines of your tip: "You must hold deep fill fill for 3sec BEFORE you press the start button in order to get a true deep fill. If you press it once after you start the cycle, you only get the 3 extra gallons. (Think of it like add a garment feature)." In order to use an old Maytag washing machine here's what weáhad to do: Select the appropriate water temperature for the clothes - the dial for that selection read: Hot - Warm - Cold. Step 2: Select the time you want to wash the clothes. Step 3 add the detergent and turn the machine to "On". Voilá!! And you walk away and come back when the clothes are really, truly washed and clean! GE should be ashamed of themselves and so should the salespeople at Lowe's for selling these machines. I'd be better off taking my clothes to the river and washing them against the rocks! :). Again, thank you for your tips. It was very kind of you to try to help. I am sure it did help others. I think right now I am so angry at that stupid machine, I, I, I, could break it and need to go and get a new one --- I just can not afford to do that on a retiree's income. Peace!

I have had the most frustrating experience ever messing with this machine. BUT tonight I think I have finally figured it out the solution, at least it worked for me anyway. If you haven’t already done so, you need to check “THE SIPHON EFFECT” on your drain. Because I had previously experienced the drain hose coming out of the wall with a previous washer I had shoved this one way down in into the wall when I got this new GE washer. Apparently it cannot be too far in or it will create what is known as the siphon effect. What was happening with mine is it would fill and within a minute there was only inches of water in there for almost the entire remainder of the wash load. There was no way the clothes could possibly get clean with such little water levels. So I backed the drain hose way back out of the standpipe to the 7” GE recommends, and believe it or not that has solved my problem as far as I can tell. It was an immediate fix—so simple I still can’t believe it!! It would definitely be worth a try if you haven’t already checked this. That explains why I never had more than a couple of inches of water in the wash tub no matter what– – because it was emptying out to equalize the pressure as soon as it would fill, that much more would siphon out and the pump was never even engaged. Which also rendered deep fill useless. I sure hope this can someone who’s had as much hate for their brand new GE HE “Deep Fill” machine as I have! 😤

So how full does the washing machine now fill? By the way, I'll still never buy a GE washer, even if yours works perfectly. There are just too many hoops to jump through! Why should I have to push and hold a button for 3 seconds just to adjust the water level. Plus, as the reviews attest, the water level is a huge issue. Better options are available!

@BadfingerFan Mine fills up all the way to within about 3” from the top of the agitator if the deep fill button is held for three seconds. Personally I made my casual wash option be “my cycle” programmed with the deep fill button already depressed for the three seconds when it was saved so I don’t have to do it every time. As long as I select casual wash it’s the same every time. Believe me I understand your frustration—been there done that. I will say though that after discovering that siphoning problem, even a regular cycle will now cover the top of the clothes with water, even if deep fill is not pushed at all. And then during the wash cycle it fills 1-2 more times with a couple of gallons additional water. It never did that before at all. The only experience I had before was that there was 2 inches of water no matter what selection I made, no matter whether I pushed the deep fill button so hard my finger went through it to the back of the washer or not (lol almost) the top clothes weren’t even wet. I’ll have to say that since this time I have probably ran 300+ more loads through it and have been satisfied. My only gripe now is that it’s not very hard to get it off balance on spin. All I an say is that in my case pulling the drain hose up out of the wall more was an immediate fix. I also used the plastic hose keeper clip that was supplied but I hadn’t used to keep the hose up and vertical against the back of the washer until it goes into the wall. Of course that plastic clip snapped in half imagine that🙄 but I made do. Good luck to you.

After watching your video and holding down the "DEEP FILL" button for the 3 seconds it does the deep fill. I LOVE this washer!! Had it 3 days, love how it washes, but I get mystified at how to get the deep fill working. Clothes come out clean, not wet after the spin, and I can finally wash my comforters at home.

The spin cycle is another huge problem with these washers. More often than not, it ends up trying to spin an unbalanced load and it fails to detect that it is shaking. The result is a machine that is about to tear own the house with it shaking around so violently, it'll make circles around itself (physically).
It's incredible that GE got away with this!
I call FAKE on most positive reviews. Planted by appliance stores I predict.

@Jays Life good luck finding a washer or dryer that doesn’t have a computer chip in it that controls the settings. The new appliances all have them. These new machines are in no way made to last for decades like the “old” fashioned machines were. I miss my old Kenmore washer. No computer chip or panel. I had total control on water level and the washer and dryer lasted over 20 years.

Does any of the newer model top loading washers fill more than two thirds without having to have a “deep fill” feature? Or is side loading better for this?

@way gill I ended up returning the above mentioned washer and traded it for the GE Deep fill because the Maytag drum was too small for my needs. So far I like it. It was a little aggravating figuring out how to get more water added but I watched videos and read comments until I figured it out. So far, so good.

Just purchased this washer. Washed one load, water doesn't fill all the way up. Settings were water level max, cold water, colors, Auto soak 30min and deep fill held down until the noise sounded. Filled up about 2/3 of the drum and stopped. Tried pushing the deep fill button more, wouldn't add anymore water. Then when I'd open and close the lid, it'd give a couple pumps of water real quick, usually two and then stop again.

All lies! There is no deep fill no matter what you press! Can't wash bedding at all. Even normal loads of clothes are wadded in knots due to lack of water and parts of the garments smell clean, and parts do not.

I am so sorry I bought this machine. I am well versed in computers - been working on computers for over 30 years. So...I do not expect to be literally stumped by something that should be simple to operate as a freaking washing machine. We bought this washer and what a pain in the rear it has been.
DEEP FILL: has worked exactly ONCE, ever.
Add additional water: has never worked.

I phoned into customer support. I had to schedule a phonecall because you were so backed up. I get a phone call back later from some lady who I'm pretty sure was Wanda Sykes. After over 30 minutes on the phone, I get talked in circles, not a single DEFINITIVE ANSWER about this washing machine except to unplug and wait 5 mins before plugging it in.
Oh and lets not forget about the load that never spinned. And I had to take it out sopping wet.
It washes well, but the features aren't working and the washer should not need to be unplugged and reset as a normal way of fixing it.

Do not ever, I repeat EVER, buy a machine without an agitator! Sorry but the top load TR7 Speed Queen washer (with agitator) is the top of the line! You don't need a fancy POWER wash button because you have a MULTITUDE of wash options including HEAVY wash. This Speed Queen actually FILLS TO TO TOP of the tub if you select and of course has many other water fill options. It also offer at least 10 favorite buttons, should you choose to program, pre-wash, pre-soak, delayed start, STABLE spin, and so much more. Lakeseminole I want a Speed Queen. But the biggest one they make is only a tiny 3.2 cu/ft. Speed Queen said its not big enough to wash a king size comforter. Makes no sense that the biggest commercial washer manufacturer only makes tiny washers.

@K Barnes Actually I was AMAZED at the size of the tube. We think we need this mega capacity units and it is just not true. Admittedly, you would not be able to wash a King Size comforter yet then again, how often do you wash them? I can run up the road and get it done for me once a year for $13. You have to see it to recognize how large the tub truly is. I've never filled this one to the top.

I'm ready to trash the 1 month old GE washer we got, get the $10 metal recycling free, and get the Speed Queen.
If there was a way to sue GE that is not a terribly difficult process, I would.
Service guy did absolutely nothing other than watch it once, and low and behold, it randomly didn't shake the crap out of the room, and he left.
Store won't take it back.
I hate GE with a passion. Made in Mexico garbage.
I am trying to talk as many people out of buying GE products from now on.

I absolutely despise this washer, I bought it new, have tried to use it for several years, and it is without a doubt the worst washing machine I've ever owned. The Deep Fill doesn't work at all with any jockeying around with the buttons, it takes FOREVER to do anything, and just changing the settings results in the slowest "thinking time" of any device I've ever seen. I will NEVER buy another GE appliance again. I'm going to go buy a used Kenmore like I used to have. At least it worked, and very easy to set.

@Linda Lewis when the lid is locked its weighing to decide how much to fill, this takes a minute or two, after the lid will unlock and begin filling and then you can add water by holding the "deep fill" button.... but still this is the worst designed hunk of junk ever... my old washer that still worked was
1. Select settings
2. Pull knob

4. Walk away.

It will NOT fill with water. Okay, we all know now that the tub is huge, great selling point, right? Now we're told that due to overbearing government regulations, GE had to limit how much water the machine could use. Like having a corvette that can only get up to a speed of 30 mph. But instead of telling us consumers about this epic failure, or offer a workaround, they continue to sell it and offer a hyperlink that shows how to do a deep fill...which only gives a splash more water.
How bad is it? 2018 Boston Marathon had heavy rain so without realizing it, my clothes finally got rinsed. It was embarrassing, I looked like I ran through a bubble/foam machine...my pits were foaming, my thighs were bubbling from "agitating" the soap out that my washing machine didn't rinse out (yes, I selected 2nd rinse). I wasn't alone though, there were a few other runners on the course who obviously had the same GE washer. Now I wash everything once then rewash again without soap. So much for saving water/energy, not.

@GE Appliances You CLEARLY DON'T GET IT. It's not an issue of too much soap, or too much clothing or any other user error...it's an issue of the machine DOES NOT FILL WITH ENOUGH WATER! The tub is roughly 18" deep and water fills only a few inches, maybe the bottom 7 or 8 inches at most. Yes, I use deep fill and yes I press and hold deep fill for several seconds and yes, it squirts a little more but it's still NOT ENOUGH WATER regardless of any other setting I select. Yes, I've tried them all several times. What is so hard to understand about that? On this thread alone, almost everyone is saying the same thing but you still post the same links to remedies that don't address the issue of NOT ENOUGH WATER. When clothes are washed with NOT ENOUGH WATER, they don't get clean AND the soap doesn't get rinsed out...as if I needed to explain that. How about posting a link on how to get the machine to FILL WITH WATER or at least admit the machine is not capable of that.

I bought this GE Washer from Costco on line for 2 weeks . Now I have been so frustrating and out of my mind with the issue of water filling ( never get enough water level as I expected ).... I had to re-wash by hand to keep clothes get better clean ... OMG !

you are fortunate that you realized early on that this so called washing machine did not do what they say it will do...clean the clothes - what a concept! My God, I have been married for 62 years and washed a family of 7's clothes in a good ole Sears Kenmore washing machine for over most of those years...that is until my kids told me it was time to get a "New" washing machine so that as I get older I don't have to be concerned about the Kenmore breaking down. A broken Kenmore washing machine has this GE, High Efficiency (Ugh what an oxymoron) beat every time! God I hate this machine! I wish I would have realized early on how bad it was. Unfortunately, my husband had a stroke and the kids came in and were helping with the wash, etc. So it wasn't until recently that I took over full time on the wash again. What a terrible machine! What a waste of money! The aggravation, lack of really clean clothes, etc make me want to put this piece of junk on the curb for the next trash pick-up. Unfortunately, we are retired and do not have the money to replace this machine! Oh dear, that just makes me ever more sad...I will be stuck with this piece of junk for the rest of my LIFE!!! YIKES!

Would it damage it if I fill it to the top with pile full water has anyone tried it, at our old place in the laundry area in that apartment building we used to live in. I use mop pile fill it another inch or two just to wash comfortable for fully loaded clothes. Were back to using liquid soap the washer is not strong enough to break the pods, the first time we wash in pod the water level was so low in fill wash I was worried it would't wash properly, my white socks came out semi wash, semi dirty, semi dry, and the clothes at the bottom still had laundry pods like it didn't break up pods, I think I rewash the clothes again, waste of water. We only had it a week.

Unbalanced loads can cause the washer to vibrate more. Stop the machine and redistribute the load. This washer is awful. The dryer is technically fine but its incessant, extremely loud, long beep (twice) is awful unless you have it set up in the basement or a large house. The door requires some decent pressure to open/close so if you have serious mobility issues, maybe avoid it. The washer however is TERRIBLE. Apparently most models will not work on normal (colors) for deep fill, one of the most common uses which negates its "deep fill" gimmick, which itself is awful: it either doesn't use enough or too much to where it will slosh onto the floors and make a mess. I assume this is due to poor tech with the weighing/calculating estimation rather than letting the user simply adjust it; it's usually not from overloading it either.

The motherboard is finicky and stopped working properly after 4 days. It will randomly beep for minutes/hours on end and the company will of course give you the run-around or it'll cost more than it's worth to replace. It doesn't agitate well enough to clean smaller items properly in a larger load and if there is anything bulky, it is extremely loud during spin and the neighbours will probably hear it. We replaced our old set from a different brand as it was old/occasionally spilling but due to its simplicity and less bells/whistles and actually cleaning sufficiently, these models are just bad in comparison.

As a young adult, I'm familiar with and welcome new tech, but maybe don't needlessly implement it if it's not tested well or easy to confuse if you want to keep future customers. The only thing I will give them is that they haven't deleted any of the complaints in the comments, but even then, they're unlikely to help in real life.

I like to put detergent on before the clothes but on the normal cycle you can't do this the lid locks and It does auto sense for the water level but if there's no clothes in. it dispenses very little water. which makes it impossible for me to do wash the way I want too I hate technology why does this..the instruction manual doesn't give you any wash times. So what? Am supposed to wait there till my washer hits the rinse cycle until I add fabric softener on certain cycles? Each cycle should be fully explained on how it operates and times for each cycle I hate this washer I didn't really have a choice cuz the wife got it before I could see it or I would have never gotten this junk

While you're at the landromat, check out the name of the washers. The number one commerical brand is Speed Queen. There's a reason for that: Durability and performance. Home versions are available.

@Jayp 3 For Precise Fill it will always add more than enough water for the clothes with you put in on whites instead of colors. So for colors choose "whites, light" and for white clothes, choose "whites, normal".

Our apologies to hear that the water levels are not satisfactory. The Department of Energy (DOE) sets standards for washer water usage. Over the years, the amount of allowable water usage has been reduced. With washers using less water and energy, you will no longer see a wash basket full of water. Most washers are now programmed with load sensing to adjust water levels based on the cycle and load size, so the amount of water used will vary.

This washer has been the worst purchase I have ever made. The water level barely comes up a quarter of the way even on the deep cycle fill. With not enough water, the washer is not able to do an effective cleaning of clothes. I had believed in GE appliances until this purchase. I will be buying a different brand next.

Yes...awful machine! So frustrating. My machine won't fill more than about 1/3 of the way...Deep fill doesn't do a thing (but makes a cute sound when pressed). Machine is 3.5yrs old. Machine has NEVER worked. HATE HE...advised my mother last week to NOT buy this machine. My machine also gets off cycle (spins when it should be filling or washing), moves about the room when spinning (But due the lid locking can not adjust the clothes manually) and even went through an entire wash cycle with OUT my starting the washer (no clothes in it nor were the lights of the machine even on during the cycle). Would certainly not buy this machines, not a GE product after this experience.

I just got this washer today. Big mistake. I cannot figure it out for my life. It is not washing, filling, or even completing a load. I am done. I am using the 24 hour return to get a new one or get a refund and buy a different brand washer. This is very disappointing because I had to save money to get a washer. Now I got one for over $800, with the warranty, and installation. This is a very difficult machine to try to use. It is not user friendly at all. I just want a machine I can turn on to wash and walk away until it is done. I think the big issue is having a computer brain on the washer. What a waste of my time and money

This washer is a nightmare. Clothes come out crunchy because they dont rinse well. I use very little detergent. Press the deep fill button......still crunchy and basically dry

Thanks so much for reaching out. Front-load washers and many newer top-load washers have a variable speed motor. The variable speed motor adjusts the agitation and spin speeds throughout the cycle based on the cycle selected, the load size, and the amount of torque (resistance) it gets from the load. There is no "fixed" speed for slow or fast speeds.

We cannot provide the RPMs (agitate/spin speeds) for our washers. All the best. -MH

Deep Fill does NOT work on my wash cycle!
The Deep Fill light is on but the water lever never goes higher than two inches, and that is being generous, rounding up, the water level in the wash cycle is probably more like an inch or maybe an inch and a half, WITH the Deep Fill light ON! I'm very dissatisfied with the so called "Deep Fill" feature as it doesn't do what the advertisements say it will do! Consumers should be able to choose how much water they want to use!

It depends, this specific machine does not washes, there is no motion on to do so. However, the front loaders that i hate so much, i rather washed by hands, moves the clothes rolling around. I don't understand why they make a washer machine that does not washes.

I also unscrewed the safely latch and stuck in the safety latch hole, so I can add softener at my discretion or Rinse cycle. Now, I just have to get the rinse cycle timing down. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I took a y/t connected to my cold water. Added a cut off hose. When washer stops filling i turn on other connector an fill to level I need. I don't use hot water to wash now I don't haft to haul water. 😉 works for me an I will NEVER buy another 1 of these washers.

the fact that you have to make sure your washer filled properly is in itself a deficiency regardless if they offer a remedy.

The Cold water inlet connection is located on the left and the Hot is on the right as you face the back of the washer. A "C" and "H" is stamped in the metal above each valve. So frustrated with this washer. I bought it for the deep fill. Some times it works but most of the time it doesn't. I've watched videos and they push and hold until you hear the beeps. I only get 1/3rd of the tube filled....I can't wash cloths this way.

They promise total control. This is a joke. When I want more water I have to "fool" the machine into thinking there is a large load. Now the Deep Fill light is on and won't go off. This You Tube video does not mention how to get the Deep Fill to stop. Lots of frustrated users of these washers. I wish GE would read these comments and add their own comments.

I just moved into a duplex with this washer in a shed. It’s driving me crazy. It squirts water into it then pauses then squirts some more then pauses. … then starts filling with water so I think it’s ok and walk away. Later when I go to get my laundry out of the washer, it’s stopped , I open the lid and the clothes are only partially wet. It never finished filling and it never started washing. Then I start it again and it starts to fill but again goes through the same thing. Eventually after an hour or so I get it to fill and then I can wash a load . Am I doing something wrong?

Got the set 2 weeks ago, literally the worse washing machine ever. We have the GTW460, I wish I had looked it up before buying as everyone says the same thing, it doesn't fill with water! With washers using less water and energy, you'll no longer see a wash basket full of water. This is Kristina's mom commenting. This machine is garbage! We just purchased this washer over the summer. Machine no longer fills up 3/4 full. Maybe 1/4 now. I want to be able to wash larger loads again! This is maddening! We shouldn't have to pay for service on a washer less than a year old. GE, I see we are not the only ones complaining about this. Please check that the leveling legs are djusted evenly and that it is on solid, level flooring. You can thank the Obama administration for the water level issue to conserve water. All washing machines have to comply with the mandates passed while this administration was still in office in 2016. Manufacturers have to comply with those mandates. Because you know Government knows how WE are supposed to wash laundry 🤦🏻‍♀️

Bought this washing machine a month ago and absolutely hate it! Worst washing machine in my 46 years of marriage! Have read and re-read the manual! Have used the deep fill but you still don't get a high enough water for a proper wash of large loads! Little agitation of the laundry which is why I chose a machine with an agitator! The sound of the agitation is like that that of an MRI machine! Intermittent and loud! Will be returning and checking out a better brand!
