The group was originally meant to act as a replacement for The Pussycat Dolls, but this plan was changed in February 2013 and the group debuted as G.R.L. The five piece group released an eponymous EP G.R.L with hit single Ugly Heart and was also featured on Pitbull's single Wild Wild Love. On September 6, 2014, it was announced that Simone Battle had passed away, leaving the group as a quartet. They split in June 2015 after releasing tribute single Lighthouse, and reformed one year later in June 2016 with new member Jazzy Mejia.

The G.R.L. hit "Ugly Heart" is about a relationship that has been broken due to the difference in the personalities of two people. The lyrics revolve around the lead singer explaining how she is leaving her partner because of his "ugly heart." She admits in the song that she thought she loved him and wanted to be with him, but she realizes now that she cannot love someone who treats her poorly. Despite his physical beauty, his inner persona is so ugly that she cannot be with him anymore. It's a shame that this group never really took off. This was their most popular song and it didn't even chart on the Billboard Hot 100. It was fairly popular in my country, and I do have memories of it. Definitely an underrated classic.
