The Garden
G. Green Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alright, give me some numbers in advance
How we supposed to win if we don’t ever get the chance (Chance)
Dance one night with no stands, I write with no hands
Ride round the city in Nikes and old Vans
Riding down Avalon analog, the man of God dance along to the sabotage
They villainize or they empathize
I just know addiction can leave you improvised
They try to Kryptonite the rise of a generation
Fire in his eyes no hesitation
Like they don’t wanna stand unified
They’d rather choose to dddd die to suicide
And ooh the pride loves to serenade
Smaller things cause you to trip right before heaven’s gate
Don’t underestimate the little things little me destined to do bigger things
Watch me in my present state
This is where real meets realer, Pac meets thriller
And God greets the killa like
It don’t get realer than that
When bars can heal scars don’t get iller than that and see
Cash rules everything around me (Cream)
Desire rules everything around me (Dream)
And I keep truth everyday around me team
Knowledge illuminates numb gatherings king
See my potential was imbedded in earth
Adversity and challenge came to measure my worth
Heaven buried me, so I’m treasured with dirt
And see they tried to tell my story so I’m telling it first (Yeah)
Water the Green Pine at the hymn of my Levi’s
Sow the seed we need the mud before the trees die
Heir in my creative lungs speaking in my native tongue
And yo the clouds could never shade the sun
I got dirt dirt dirt
(Struggle don’t last for long)
And it hurts hurts hurts
(Struggle don’t last for long)
But it’s gotta work work work
(Struggle don’t last for long)
Cuz I’m weak just to win
I got dirt dirt dirt
(Struggle don’t last for long)
And it hurts hurts hurts
(Struggle don’t last for long)
But it’s gotta work work work
(Struggle don’t last for long)
Cuz I’m judged to learn
It’s gotta work work work
(Struggle don’t last for long)
It’s gotta work work work
(Struggle don’t last for long)
It’s gotta work
(Struggle don’t last for long)
It’s gotta work work work
(Struggle don’t last for long)
Listen, I told them boys to lie back
You don’t wanna dance with a fool then slide back
Dancing with two right feet with left shoes to get my time back
I’m feeling like Mike Jack, I’m dreamin’ in Imax (Yeah)
They say Mike you been on that lyrical
What good is that if my spirit on
My bro’s can’t move thru the door cuz they carry they baggage
From casket to casket like woe
Wait you maskin’ your passion cuz life gave you a hands
Now you playing for status like
I had to change up the fashion
Like my name is Virgil I carry the static like
As kids, we didn’t have enough to be enough
These days we have a hard time believing we enough
We stunt, cuz back then we couldn’t afford it
Reality we one check away from being homeless
God touched the sound and made it heavenly
Pain choked me with his chords made some melodies
I had to take some L’s so it can level me
Cooking thru disaster is the recipe
Where I’m from we movin’ pies without an easy bake
Get it out the mud that’s some easy cake
But I needed drip like TD Jakes
Respect like Aretha Frank for my Issa Rae’s
God touched the tongue and wrote a psalm on it
The thoughts touched the pad and wrote a song on it
I sing hymns how my people survived lynching and crack pipes
Now we run the world and sing our songs during halftimes
I’m a Black boy sown in the soil of America, the era of Indifference
Brown man with a hijab we screamin’ terrorist
White man with a badge on we scream supremacist
Black man with hoodies on we screamin’ menaces
All of these narratives, all of these characters
Why are the scared of us?

Why are the scared of us?

Overall Meaning

The song, The Garden by G. Green, is a complex critique of American society, from systematic oppression at the macro level to personal struggles at the micro level. The lyrics begin with a call for fairness and opportunity, stating that it is impossible to succeed if people aren't given the chance to do so. From there, G. Green addresses various societal issues, including addiction, suicide, and societal divides. He highlights the fact that the little things, small systemic issues and individual struggles, can add up and cause people to trip up on their way to reaching their full potential. Nevertheless, no challenge is insurmountable, as the chorus insists that the struggles we face will be overcome with time and determination. The song then ends with a lament for the various ways in which entire groups of people are being demonized and marginalized, and raises the question of why society as a whole is so scared of certain people.

At under four minutes in length, The Garden is a rich, dense song that rewards careful listening several times over. Among the standout lyrics are the opening call for fairness and a chance to succeed, as well as the line "don't underestimate the little things little me destined to do bigger things." G. Green also makes use of powerful and evocative imagery in lines like "when bars can heal scars don't get iller than that." Interesting themes that run through the song include societal divides, addiction and suicide, the power of small things to add up to a big impact, and the constant struggle to overcome oppression and marginalization.
