Dutton, born in Philadelphia, began playing guitar at age 8. He wrote his first song by the time he was in the 9th grade and began playing harmonica in a wire rack. Dutton credits Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr., as well as then-contemporary "old school" hip-hop sounds of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Philadelphia's own Schooly D as influences.
Dutton, still in high school at Germantown Friends School, began playing solo on the streets of Philadelphia. After a year of college, he relocated to Boston, working as a fundraiser for Peace Action and playing wherever and whenever he could. One of his few indoor gigs at this time was a Boston bar called The Tam O'Shanter, where he met drummer Jeffrey "The Houseman" Clemens in January 1993. Dutton and Clemens began working as a duo, they were joined a few months later by bassist Jim "Jimi Jazz" Prescott and became the house band on Mondays at The Plough and Stars in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The name G. Love doesn't really have that much of a story to it. The 'G' stands for Good as said in many radio interviews. He said in an interview that the 'Love' was just there because it sounded right.
G. Love featured Jack Johnson on his 1999 LP Philadelphonic playing an early version of Jack Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" when Jack was an unknown artist. Jack later featured the song on his 2003 LP On and On.
Known nowadays for his excellent live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson, who signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter.
Still Hangin' Around

But then again, so am I
They ought to stick me in an institution
Just so I can be by your side
Look at me, I'm still hanging around
Still hangin around, oh baby I'm still around
In a million pieces
Crying in the middle of the street
Blame it all on me
Look at me, still hanging around
Still hangin around, oh baby I'm still around
People say you don't fall in and out of love all the time
People say that it don't come easy
But you sure came easy for me oh my
Now, I won't tell no one our business
About the night we met
But if you're lookin for trouble
Trouble is what you get
Look at me, still hanging around
Still hangin around, oh baby I'm still around
Now there's a lot of things that I'd like to change 'bout myself
There ain't a thing I'd change about you baby
Except maybe... well...
Oh I'm just kidding can't you tell
You're like water from the well
My buckets filled
And its got no leaks
The means every drop I got of you girl
I'm gonna keep
Look at me, still hanging around
Still hangin around, Oh baby I'm still around
I'm still around
In G. Love's song Still Hangin' Around, the singer is declaring his love and devotion to someone who might be considered crazy, much like himself. He suggests that they both belong in an institution, just so they could be together. The chorus of the song reiterates the singer's commitment by stating that he is hanging around despite any potential breakups or difficulties that might come their way. He acknowledges that other people might not understand their relationship, suggesting that not everyone falls in and out of love as often as they do. However, he's certain that his feelings for this person are genuine, and he wouldn't change a thing about them.
One of the explanations for the lyrics could be that it's a reflection of G. Love's own unstable and sometimes tumultuous romantic life. The song is written in a classic blues style, which aligns with G. Love's roots in blues music, and the lyrics are very straightforward, making it easy to connect with the emotions of the singer.
