Dutton, born in Philadelphia, began playing guitar at age 8. He wrote his first song by the time he was in the 9th grade and began playing harmonica in a wire rack. Dutton credits Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr., as well as then-contemporary "old school" hip-hop sounds of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Philadelphia's own Schooly D as influences.
Dutton, still in high school at Germantown Friends School, began playing solo on the streets of Philadelphia. After a year of college, he relocated to Boston, working as a fundraiser for Peace Action and playing wherever and whenever he could. One of his few indoor gigs at this time was a Boston bar called The Tam O'Shanter, where he met drummer Jeffrey "The Houseman" Clemens in January 1993. Dutton and Clemens began working as a duo, they were joined a few months later by bassist Jim "Jimi Jazz" Prescott and became the house band on Mondays at The Plough and Stars in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The name G. Love doesn't really have that much of a story to it. The 'G' stands for Good as said in many radio interviews. He said in an interview that the 'Love' was just there because it sounded right.
G. Love featured Jack Johnson on his 1999 LP Philadelphonic playing an early version of Jack Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" when Jack was an unknown artist. Jack later featured the song on his 2003 LP On and On.
Known nowadays for his excellent live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson, who signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter.

Girl was the type you have dreams about on Sunday afternoon
The kinda girl you see stopping traffic down town on a sunny day in June
It wouldn't be right if I didn't pull up to tell her she looked good
Hey ma you know that your looking kinda fine, maybe you and I should?
Hook up, go out, a few drinks, get down
You know we could have a lot of fun tonight
Just say, I ain't getting down with another man's girl
So baby please
[Chorus]
If you got a man don't lead me on
If you got a man don't crowd my phone
If you got a man and say you don't
Find somebody else, walk on
If you got a man don't lead me on
If you got a man don't crowd my phone
If you got a man and say you don't
Find somebody else, walk on
To my surprise you was fast to say your kinda cute
She got into my ride, I put it in drive and said, "I'm gonna take care of you"
She was free for the night with nothing to do even said the time and place
Almost felt too good to be true when I heard my girl say
Hook up, go out, a few drinks, get down
You know we could have a lot of fun tonight
Come out with me, be straight
Don't play, it's alright
Just say, I ain't getting down with another mans girl
So baby please
[Chorus]
Walk on, just pick up yourself and baby
Walk on, no time for your games so baby
Walk on, put on your shoes and baby
Walk on, if you think your gonna play me
Walk on, just pick up yourself and baby
Walk on, no time for your games so baby
Walk on, put on your shoes and baby
Walk on, if you think your gonna play me
[Chorus: x2]
If you got a man don't lead me on
If you got a man don't crowd my phone
If you got a man and say you don't
Find somebody else walk on
If you got a man don't lead me on
If you got a man don't crowd my phone
If you got a man and say you don't
Find somebody else walk on
(Shake it, shake it)
(Shake it, shake it)
(Shake it, shake it)
The song "Walk On" by G. Love is about a man who has met a girl whom he is attracted to, but she already has a man. He tries to persuade her to come out with him for a few drinks, but she initially declines because she has a man. The chorus then highlights the man's plea to the girl to be honest about her relationship and not lead him on. The song reaches its climax when the girl eventually decides to come out with him for the night, but it soon becomes clear that the man is not interested in dating someone who has a boyfriend. He urges the girl to "walk on", not to waste his time or play with his emotions if she does not intend to leave her boyfriend.
Overall, the song is a commentary on relationships and the importance of honesty and transparency. The singer makes it clear that he is not interested in being someone's "other man" and wants to avoid any drama that may ensue from a complicated relationship.
