Fairytale
Gabby Sophia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(1, 2, 3, 4)
Another villain defeated in the story
Another hero who needs to get his glory
So he took it on himself to conquer him by morning
But what if he's not the bad guy?
What if he's not the bad guy?
The voice was taken from the mermaid
But what if she stole it in the first place
And they believed her because of her pretty face
Maybe she's the one to blame
Maybe she's the one to blame
What if the bad guy wasn't the bad guy?
What if the hero wasn't really good?
What if the damsel in distress was living her life
And he took her away from the one she loved?
What if prince charming poisoned sleeping beauty
Cuz she rejected him a moment before?
And what if fairytales don't have happy endings
What if they end up in war?
They say snow white was charmed by the sorceress
But what if she checked the apple beforehand?
Just to make sure those dwarves didn't get it again
Maybe she's not so evil
Maybe she's not so evil
I guess the beast ended up alright in the end
But what if the enchantress messed with their heads?
Maybe she made them all hate him
What if he was always kind
And it was just their state of mind?
What if the bad guy wasn't the bad guy?
What if the hero wasn't really good?
What if the damsel in distress was living her life
And he took her away from the one she loved?
And what if prince charming poisoned sleeping beauty
Cuz she rejected him a moment before?
And what if fairytales don't have happy endings
What if they end up in war?
What if the bad guy wasn't the bad guy?
(Oh he wasn't so bad)
What if the hero wasn't really good?
(He wasn't really good)
What if the damsel in distress was living her life
(She was living her life)
And he took her away from the one she loved?
(From the one that she loved)
What if prince charming poisoned sleeping beauty
Cuz she rejected him a moment before?
(Oh one moment before)
And what if fairytales don't have happy endings
(No happy endings)

What if they end up in war?
War

Overall Meaning

The song "Fairytales" by Gabby Sophia is a critical take on common fairy tales' plotlines, questioning the notion of the traditional hero and villain roles. The song brings up the possibility that the bad guy wasn't evil and the hero wasn't good. It also suggests that the damsel in distress may have had her own life, and the hero took her away from someone she loved, which could change the entire perception of the story. The song also questions the characters' actions like the poisoning of sleeping beauty and Snow White's choices before succumbing to the poisoned apple.

The lyrics suggest that the stories we grew up listening to had a predetermined structure that assigned heroes and villains, and the characters' actions did not necessarily depict their actual self. Gabby Sophia's message is to dig deeper into the stories' plotlines and question the truth behind what we are being presented with.

The song's tone is melancholic and critical, which works well with the lyrics' theme. Gabby Sophia's vocals add to the song's tone, making it an ideal song for anyone who loves contemporary music and insightful lyrics.

A repetition of the question of whether heroes are always heroic after all

(He wasn't really good)
A negative answer to the question, suggesting there is grey enough that sometimes the hero might be more of a villain

What if the damsel in distress was living her life
The same challenge to a narrative trope as previous times this line has been used

(She was living her life)
A positive acknowledgement that a female character was, for once, not completely helpless

And he took her away from the one she loved?
A restatement of an earlier refrain - what if the hero's actions were not always heroic?

(From the one that she loved)
A call for acknowledging a supporting character who has been wrongfully overlooked due to tropes about the importance of the hero

What if prince charming poisoned sleeping beauty
The same disturbing question, exploring the idea that fairy tales are not always as simple and as happy as typically presented

Cuz she rejected him a moment before?
An additional implication of the prince's evil nature - that he has issues with rejection and lashes out as a result

And what if fairytales don't have happy endings
The same challenging of a stereotypical ending

(No happy endings)
A bleak statement, suggesting that sometimes life doesn't turn out the way we want it to, and sometimes stories are no different

What if they end up in war?
The same reflection on the potential for war in stories that don't end happily

War
A somber reminder of the darker side of human history and conflict, and a call for empathy and understanding in situations where there might not be an obvious 'good guy' or 'bad guy'

This song just shows that just because you see something, doesn't mean it's the full story. It's shows that something from your pov isn't what everyone else sees. It also shows that we shouldn't completely believe something someone tells us in their pov.

@VirgilAtlas

Exactly

@lucytwinkle2047

Yes!!!! People need to understand that!

@LilyLovingLlama

Yes!! There’s a reason that there’s that saying “there’s two sides to every story”

@emmakaram9490

Moral of this story : Never judge a book by his cover
Just because someone doesn’t have a « pretty » or dress up darkly that doesn’t mean he is evil and just because a person have a « beautiful » face or dress up colorfully that doesn’t mean they are good persons
The society judges too much people because of their looks…

@cheyanne1509

Exactly! its not about looks or voices, its about how they act and what they do. Dont judge a book by its cover, look at the contents inside.

Randomly found the audio before falling asleep just now. Came here to say I love how different this is. The way the harmonies work with the bass is something I haven't really heard before. And I love the moments where the notes are slightly off key at times, it's clearly intentional and I think it adds a lot to it. And of course your voice is very nice to listen to. Very well done :)))
