They first appeared together in 1959 in The Bluefrets. Early songwriting work was for Dean Ford and the Gaylords (later to become Marmalade). Signed by The Beatles in 1968 to write for Apple Records' Mary Hopkin.
In 1970 they joined Tom McGuinness and Hughie Flint to form McGuinness Flint and penned the hits ''When I'm Dead And Gone'' (which reached No 2 in the UK in 1970) and ''Malt And Barley Blues'' (No 5 in 1971).
In 1972 they formed their own duo and enjoyed UK chart successes in 1976 and 1977 with four hits, including ''I Wanna Stay With You'' and ''Heart On My Sleeve'' both of which reached No 6. They split in 1979.
Gallagher & Lyle compositions have provided hits for Art Garfunkel (Breakaway) and Don Williams (Stay Young) . Graham Lyle later wrote with Terry Britten and their hits included ''What's Love Got To Do With It'' and ''We Don't Need Another Hero'' for Tina Turner and ''Just Good Friends'' for Michael Jackson. Benny Gallagher spent nine years as founding director of Performing Artists Media Rights Association (PAMRA) and also performed in The Manfreds with Paul Jones, Mike D'Arbo, Tom McGuinness and Mike Hugg.
I Believe In You

Not just what comes to mind
'Cause I can see you're somewhere in between
This morning and the late last night
And I know you know
I know you know
I know you know
Even the stars will pass away
And the sun will burn to coal
And even men will hear the angels say
He was a fool to let it show
But I know you know
And there ain't nothing I can do
I know you know
I know you know
I'm so in love with you
And I know it ain't never come to no good
And I know it seems like it ain't no use
And I know I should've left while I still could
But I can't find a reason to
So tell me something that you mean
Not just what comes to mind
Because you know I would believe
Anything you'd say
And I know you know
I know you know
I know you know
I'm so in love with you
The lyrics of Gallagher and Lyle's "I Believe in You" are a beautiful testament of love and devotion. The opening lines encourage their partner to speak their mind earnestly, instead of simply saying what comes to mind. The lyrics suggest a deep level of intimacy between the two people, with the suggestion that they know each other inside out. The lyrics allude to how, at certain times, we're all in between the morning and the late last night, but despite this, the singer conveys that they're so deeply in love with their partner that nothing matters.
As the lyrics continue, they become even more poetic, with the suggestion being that nothing, not even the stars, can ever outlast or replace the love they have for each other, and the singer knows that. The lyrics suggest an unshakeable level of devotion, with even the angels looking at what they have and thinking they're a fool, but the singer does "know." Despite the lack of certainty, the singer has and how it never comes to good, they cannot let go of their love for their partner.
Overall, "I Believe in You" is a beautiful song about the power of love and how it can be so all-encompassing that it cannot be forgotten or ignored. It is a song of devotion and enduring passion.
