I agree, Pokemon games should not be hung up on YOU being the Champion.
It's a goal, but the story should continue if you lose. Like your rival becomes champ and there could be a dark twist in the story to not succeeding in your dream and you train hard and challenge him later.

You could also become a Pokemon breeder, gym leader OR BETTER you could join team rocket.

Or even accept defeat, you've got all the badges and travel to another region and challenge their pokemon league.

Heck even get into Pokemon racing and try be the fasest racer in the world. That would be fun actually.

Pokemon has so much untapped potential, I could go on for hours.

I truly believe they don't break the potential barrier because it will set expensive expectations and whoever is behind Pokemon is about money.

Which is dissapointing when you see amazing Games like Breath of the Wild.

While every other pokemon game made a step forward, a lot about gen 8 seems like a step back. The smaller pokedex didn't phase me since I prefer a fresh start every time and my favourtie generation is gen 5, which while didn't really cut the dex, pretty much replaced every staple pokemon for a (rather polarising) fresh experience.
But the lack of a true villain team and the legend of the... legendaries meant that I didn't have anything to look forward to other than more gym battles.
- I still know nothing about these gym leaders, especially compared to sun and moon's trial captains, so any value they bring is purely through their difficulty, which was kind of disappointing.
- Dyna/gigantamax killed all pacing for me most of the time where the only answers to avoid getting three pokemon one-shot was to either pray that you can tank it or use your dynamax right after.
- The game seems to lack any deeper (or surface) meaning like gen 5's morality and gen 3+6's planet preservation messages but with players in their 20's and 30's moving on, I can't blame them for abandoning this concept especially with the dramatic and unrealistic power scaling which sometime got out of hand (the gen 4 game and b2w2's manga are two that come to mind).
- the wild area is a nice step into open-world pokemon but of course, hardware limitations (or maybe spaghetti code) turn it into quite a let down. Was low poly models at further ranges that hard?

and final nit-picks:
- I prefer the more orchestral/band music from older gens but the gym battle theme can stay.
- Zacian and Zamazenta have hilariously forgettable names and I don't even know what Eternatus is supposed to be
- what if we just replaced zacian with glavenus?

Overall, great video that held back a bit on the biases and I must thank the game for teaching me a very important lesson, never buy a game on launch. Look forward to whatever else you release while I replay older games.

I really like the in depth review you did! Also the categories, well summarized and your voice is pretty soothing lol
The graphics look good to me as well, can't compare to other titles and it's bland here and there but it's still a huge step forward (even at the cost of other features).
I like the music a lot too!
From what I've seen, most complains lie in too much linerarity, too little exploration option, too easy, scaling issues, online debacle and low FPS/glitches.
I haven't played it yet so that's all I can say personally.
Let's see how my opinion changes.
The Sun/Moon series was a huge disappointment to me, I really don't know how it could be worse.
Link Trade was literally the BEST feature of that game.
Edit: as you were talking about the prices, I just noticed I got the Pokemon Sw/Sh version of the Switch lite lol (it looks great ngl)

Thanks so much for your detailed comment! If your friends to watch too, it would really help out the channel, so thank you so much!

I definitely agree about Final Fantasy soundtracks. FF7 and FF9 in particular are two OSTs I've listened to and enjoyed start to finish. But I honestly think SwSh is up there!

I'm still divided on Dynamaxing...but I do like the Max Raid bosses, aside from how long they take. I think I prefer Mega Evolutions, but at least every Pokemon can Dynamax. But it's still OP...but at least I think everyone can agree that Z-Moves suck! Lol

Thanks for the suggestion on getting into competitive! With the new DLC coming out this week, it might finally be time for me! Haha

Thanks again for your continued support. I hope we keep seeing you in the comments in the future!!

Babu's Game Room

I get where you're coming from. It's counter intuitive that players should need to be an active participant in the difficulty of the game. With that said, you're definitely right that the developers choose accessibility over utilizing the difficulty and balance they clearly know about (see: Battle Tower).

But if you're a fan of the series, you know that you're playing a game for kids. And if you're coming in with years of experience and knowledge into a game that's supposed to feel like a "fresh start", then you're going to need to keep that in mind.

I'd say my suggestion to use crappier Pokemon or using more than 6 Pokemon is more akin to telling someone who finds Super Mario World too easy to stop using the cape to fly over every level.

But changing "set" to "shift"? That's literally just turning off "beginner mode"!

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a challenging Pokemon game. But I don't think there has been a challenging mainline Pokemon game since...ever? Maybe B2/W2's challenge mode, but even that wasn't too bad...

Xo_amber 133

The main campaign was yet another hand-holdy and forgettable story that we've already seen multiple times

- Many Pokemon were cut, then sold later as DLC (or cut altogether)

- Bare-bones routes that are extremely linear with no sense of exploration at all outside of the Wild Area

- Mandatory EXP share which lead to easy over leveling and 0 challenge

- Non-existent postgame content

- Dynamax is an awful gimmick that will just be scrapped and replaced with the next gen gimmick like Megas and Z-Moves were

- Uninspiring graphics that look more like an up-scaled 3DS game than a console game.

If the wild area was a feature years ago in an earlier pokemon game I'd likely be impressed, but I already explored the concept better in monster hunter stories. Looking at the wild area it just feels big and empty. Its more a glorified safari without the dumb rules of bait and rocks. Playing stories only gave me the realization what an explorative world traveling with your favorite monsters could provide. Pokemon lacks depth and explorations, everything is linear and visually bland (also not ignoring the non-seamless transition of weather)

Pokemon is too far back with its ideas, and caters way too much to the casual majority, making too many questionable decisions and removal of features with those that remain lacking in quality. Sales were clearly in part due to its brand identity, the popularity of the console, and the interest of those who heard the controversy but (also including others who) were too narrow minded to believe what they heard and bought the game out of mere curiosity to see if the rumors were as accurate as they were. Frankly nothing the game does is any more impressive than a previous pokemon entry, aside a few QOL additions.
I cant name a single thing that SWSH does that I couldn't get an equal or greater experience in an older title.

With so many options out there for games, its a wonder how one could justify picking up this game over others. SWSH is where i realized the series isn't going to improve substantially if at all anymore (and dexit taking away one of pokemons most iconic features cutting all emotional connection to my team and dropped motivation to 0). I had to quit, theres no new experiences to make, just reskins of the exact same one.

The only positive I can say, is now that pokemon is so lacklster I now have more time for better series that deserve more attention. Monster hunter stories is getting a sequel and the first one (while several years old by now) already replaced pokemon for me (even before i realized I was losing interest in pokemon).
While I dont think pokemon is dreadfully awful, i just think its lacking in so many areas and offers so little that I could not even respectfully recommend anyone play it. I instead tell people to look elsewhere and give another series a shot. Pokemon has a well know identity but that doesnt mean equivalent quality. Branch out, find something new, you'll likely find something far more worth your time.

While I suppose many are perfectly comfortable staying in the same place doing the same thing forever... You really could be missing out, you never know, but no one can force you to get out of your comfort zone no matter how much its realistically holding you back from other experiences.

Re: Dynamaxing -- I think I'll wait for the meta to develop before I make any firm judgments on it, haha

Re: Graphics -- I just figured the berry trees were meant to stand out! And yeah, I do agree that the DLC is a big upgrade to the base game.

Re: Online -- I just miss the GTS. But honestly, Max Raids is the most connectivity I've had with friends in the game (aside from battling/trading) in any gen ever. Even if Max Raids themselves aren't perfect.

Re: Dexit -- The point I was making earlier was that, if you had the old games during Gen 3, it didn't matter. Your old Pokemon were trapped in Gen 1/2, and even buying BOTH R/S didn't get you the full 300+ Pokedex. If you wanted a full Pokedex, you needed to buy and play through at least 2 extra full-priced games. Nowadays, if you want to fill your Pokedex, and you have a full Pokedex in the old games, it's easier than ever to transfer them forwards...if you pay ~$10. But that price is so much lower than 2 new Pokemon games, and a lot less effort! People definitely felt like "I had to catch the old 251 Pokemon before, why should I have to catch them from scratch when I could have just bred eggs to transfer forward?". But with SwSh, you have that option, and also have a lot more Pokemon available to you if you only play Gen 8 for the price of a game and a half (I think!).

As for why things were coded into the game that weren't available...I'm guessing they were planned for either limited-time events, or as prizes for tournaments or something. Like Celebi being in Gen 2's dex.

Re: Expectations -- I disagree that it was a downgrade from Gen 7, but I think that just has to do with our respective preferences. I think the biggest downgrade for me was from Gen 5 to Gen 6. I expected something nearly as good/fun as Gen 5, but in 3D! Instead, I got a watered-down, empty-feeling Pokemon game. Gen 7 felt new and fun, but didn't feel quite good enough for me. Compared to Gens 6 and 7, I enjoyed 8 a lot more. I know that won't be the same for everyone.

I think I gave a fairly balanced view on the game in the video. There will be things missing for everyone, and things that some people don't like. And I think a hard-core Pokemon fan who is still playing and thinking about the older gens will be a different beast to please compared to a fan who just plays each gen, who in turn will be very different from a more casual fan. I mean, I'm a fairly hard-core Pokemon fan, and I enjoyed SwSh. There are things to like and things to dislike, and a lot of it will boil down to each player's taste. I'm just suggesting that people should level their expectations, especially if you're buying a game blind.

Babu's Game Room

Re: Towns -- I don't remember many towns since Gen 5, tbh. I guess Gen 6 had that big town with the blackout/roadblock. I think SwSh is par for the course, but the music (and occasionally the look) made it decent for me, lol

Re: Raids -- Fair enough. I usually did them while multi-tasking, so maybe that influences my opinion. The AI is annoying, and a challenge to overcome...but usually one that isn't too hard to overcome in my experience. I guess if you do more raids, you'll run into more stupid situations, and it'll definitely suck if you can't play online.

Re: Exp Share -- Yeah, it would be nice to have the ability to turn it off...with that said, you do have the option of rotating your team with your boxed party to prevent your team from getting overlevelled which is what I did. So again, players have to make the game more challenging for themselves rather than novices (and kids) having to struggle to make the game easy for themselves. It's a fair design philosophy, imo.

Re: Experience candies -- Strong disagree -- "If something is given to you, you should use it"...the game is meant to be a fair challenge for kids who are picking up SwSh as their very first Pokemon game, maybe their first RPG ever. Fans like you or I who know ALL the game mechanics, have the type chart memorized, know to catch Pokemon with good abilities and natures, know how to create balanced teams and movesets...we can look at the experience candy, look at the levels of our teams vs. the levels of rival trainers, and instantly realize "Hey, if I use this, the game will become too easy". Don't make the game easier for yourself and be SurprisedPikachu.jpg when the game is too easy! ahaha

Re: Catch restrictions -- I agree with you that finding hidden pokemon, finding hidden areas with strong Pokemon and being able to catch them, or even just level-scaling to each badge all would've been great. Keep in mind though I've gotten at least one comment on this video by someone saying they would have hated getting lost in a cave...I'm hoping that the Wild Area is a taste of what's to come in the series, and they do more of those ideas in the future. Mechanically, I know the Wild Area wasn't perfect, but nonetheless, I enjoyed it for what it is.

Babu's Game Room

Re: Difficulty -- I agree that the games have become more streamlined and easy, and I think that's largely a trend that's happening in gaming in general. But for the main story in a game made for kids, it's going to feel especially bad. As a Pokemon fan, I dealt with this by imposing challenges on myself. If the game is too easy when you use items in battle? Don't use them. Too easy when you can switch Pokemon every time the opponent sends one out? Battle Style: Set! Too easy to swap Pokemon on Routes? Don't! I mean sure, an argument could be made that if the features are there, why not use them? But if it's making the game un-fun, then DON'T use them, haha

While you or I might not enjoy the streamlining, there are two big markets who DO like it: Casual/young fans, and hardcore fans whose goal is to just rush to the end-game. Especially when there's little difference between accessing a box anywhere vs. flying back to town, changing your team, and walking back to where you are, aside from being a waste of time, I like that the option is there when you need it...and the game never forces it on you (unlike exp share). Remember I also looked at whether the game is worth your time, meaning it doesn't waste your time -- Time saving features, especially optional ones, are great imo!

Re: "Chosen one" -- I mean ignore in the sense of rolling your eyes and just accepting the battles. And having most of it being shoved into short cutscenes, and then for one somewhat lengthy segment (which for all intents and purposes is essentially a "final dungeon"), it's fairly easy to dismiss. Maybe "dismiss" is a better word than ignore. But I like that beating the champion feels like the conclusion to the plot, rather than saving the world or whatever.

Re: Rivals -- I think I enjoyed the character development more than the plot, which I kind of wrapped up all into the "story/presentation" category. I realized that they're all about living with failed expectations: Bede's arrogance doesn't let him accept his failure to meet his expectations. Hop accepts that he didn't meet his expectations "YET", and decides to never give up and keep trying. Marnie, when met with failure, readjusts her expectations, and seems happy with where she is after readjusting them. They did much better with the rivals in SwSh than Gens 6 or 7 imo.

Re: Plot -- I think the problem is that you're comparing it to gens 4/5 and what not. Those games are over a decade old now, aren't they? I've got the last two gens fresh in my mind, and realistically, we should be looking at the most recent games to see where the game is coming from. But anyways yeah, Rose being the villain was lame. Oleanna was an obvious hidden villain. I would've liked Leon to be a villain too, but haven't we had an evil Champion already? But really...Leon is supposed to be long-time Pokemon fans like us. He starts with Charmander, is "bad with directions" (aka. has an open map with the freedom to explore) and is always charging in to right all the wrongs he finds. So I appreciated that aspect of his character, at least, haha

Babu's Game Room

If you can get a good price on Sword or Shield, I'd recommend this one. If you want something more budget friendly and have another device (especially a 2DS/3DS), you can get some older Pokemon games to satisfy the itch. Pokemon Yellow and Crystal are my favourite budget options on the 2DS. Black/White would be my recommendations to an adult.

If he's watching the show though, he might be most interested in Sword/Shield because they're the "most recent games" (and will be even after Diamond/Pearl come out)...and the show usually features the Pokemon from the most recent games.

I'm worried that Diamond/Pearl will be just nostalgia bait (since they're remakes), so someone who hasn't played the originals might not appreciate them as much.

The Arceus one will be a completely new game -- That usually means it'll be either hit or miss in the Pokemon series!

I really enjoyed New Pokemon Snap, but that one's not an RPG...but it's a lot of fun, and probably something a youngster can enjoy easily. (though you don't CATCH any Pokemon in the game, so that might be a letdown)

TL;DR? Sword/Shield isn't a bad choice, especially for a kid, and especially if he likes the show. Diamond/Pearl might be tailored towards fans of the series. Arceus = no one knows how that will turn out atm! Or if you have a 3DS, test the waters with some cheaper games (especially Yellow or Crystal on the Virtual Console)!

Hope this helps!

Rant Radio

Ite, this one's gonna be a bit long, but bare with me peeps:

Since I was kid playing pokemon blue, red and then yellow WAY back when, I Always made sure I owned a Nintendo handheld specifically for Pokemon.
I've played every mainline game upto Sun & Moon multiple times and still play Moon, OR and VR crystal on my 3ds today along with the gba & ds versions on emulator..

Now since x&y, I've been of the opinion that they should just chill on the yearly releases, chill on making two Very similar versions and just focus on designing a out of this open world pokemon game.
We've seen it already through Emerald and Platinum so it CAN be done (before anyone comments it can't).
With gts, wonder trade and pokemon bank, do we really need two games with around 7-15 different pokemon?

Imagine, we get one pokemon game called "Pokemon Journeys".
The region is massive on a scale of black flag or origins map, with many different sized towns, cities, grassland, lakes/sea/rivers, mountains and hills.
The character We customise and design before beginning has a choice of voices to select from, hair designs, height, weight, age (age effects the story and playthrough; a young trainer starts in a small town with parents, older has you starting in a larger city and differs how you get your first pokemon and what).

The character has been fleshed out to include level skills also, like: Climbing (trees for berries, mountains, hills).
Swimming (if you don't have water pokemon).
Stamina (that allows you to run and swim for longer).
Intelligence (for solving puzzles and riddles throughout the world).
Maybe even have a "good & bad" that effects how much money, what items you get from random quest giving npcs, allowing multiple playthroughs and effecting the story.

Explore every nook & crany of the region: dive and find treasure (only with a water pokemon), Fly can only be used if you have a flying pokemon big enough to ride on but its used how Soar was in ORAS.

Quit making/designing new pokemon, they've been pretty poor since after x&y, just throw in 4-600 pokemon from Every region (except Alola & Galar pokemon) before completing the game and getting the national dex to release the later two gens.
Large stretches of grassland and desert can be traversed with large pokemon like Arcanine, Mudsdale and such to get through quicker, but there are mysteries and secret/hidden caves in the most likely and unlikely of places that could reveal a rare/mythical/legendary pokemon.

Keep the same battle system but give it more animation like Stadium/Colosseum did.

They could take their time designing dlcs of the older regions years later and just keep giving us another older region every 8 - 12months (that's every bodies favourite regions fully designed), battle frontier dlc, sevii Islands dlc.

Gym leaders no longer use typing (other than maybe the first 2 gyms), while the others test your abilities in dealing a gym that constantly lowers your accuracy and uses confusion attacks, a gym that focuses on power and using tank pokemon, a gym that focuses on using high speed pokemon.

I like the idea of the pokemon league being a tournament like the world tournament in B&W2 with a total of around 20 trainers who also collected badges (which shows how the world also has many other trainers out there other than just you and your rival). After winning the tournament (it randomly changes your opponents if you lose and restart the tournament) you battle the Elite Four who focus on typing, but won't necessarily use a pokemon of that type (losing to the elite four only restarts your battle with Just the elite four), If and when you Finally beat them, you become the region champion.

Still have an evil team, but just make them an organised gang of pokemon thieves and no-gooders like team rocket again that don't really effect the story in anyway other than stopping them from stealing anymore pokemon. They don't awaken a legendary beast for no reason..

I have more ideas, but this is just off the top of my high AF head.

Pokemon could be SO much more, but we settle for less.

Eiko Final

Well this helped with me on decided to get BotW or pokemon.

BotW is just a better first game/new console title.

I think after X and Y. They just made the game far too guided holding hand. Rather then, letting the user learn by their own means.

Like, you literally don't need an hm slave anymore in sun and moon. Not to mention your "frival" chooses the starter your strong against...

They could easily strip this game down of all it's guided hand crap. Let the player loose . And a 5y/o could still beat the game... There is clearly a point in which a game treats everyone like said 5y/o... It seems S&S has gone waaaay past it sadly

Babu's Game Room

@Starlight Mewtwo has a lot of different strategies because he has a lot of possible moves. You can usually change them pretty easily after he's learned them if it's not working out for you.

- Psychic/Psystrike (to get a good attack of his Psychic type)
Then you decide if you want an offensive one, or a non-offensive one.
If you want all out offensive, you can teach it moves like Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, or Thunderbolt. If you don't mind buffing, you could teach it Nasty Plot to double Sp. Attack. So something like...

+
- Nasty Plot or Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast

If you want something a bit more stall-y, you could teach it some defensive moves like...

+
- Recover
- Will-O-Wisp (no damage, but 100% chance of burn)
- Taunt (enemy can't use status/defensive moves)

Hopefully that gets some ideas rolling for ya'! =)

I tried to fight my bias with this review: I enjoyed the game quite a bit, and I tried to rate the game solely on "Is It Worth Playing?" rather than how much I enjoyed it. I didn't love everything about the game, and some people won't love the things I loved. Nonetheless, this will be a special game for me for a long time: I own the Korean version of the game because I purchased it while working as a teacher, teaching English to kids who were my age when I started playing Pokemon. So hopefully that helps contextualize this review a bit!

honestly blows my mind. I watched the entire video going back and forth buying a switch just for this game and LOVED how in depth you made this. So much better than IGN. I expected at least a couple thousand subscribers. This channel is extremely underrated and you did so well. I wouldn’t normally subscribe, but you definitely deserve one because you’ve been a huge help!! Thank you and keep it going. You have loads of potential and commitment to quality with your videos.
