At the Zoo
Garfunkel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I do believe it
I do believe it's true
It's a light and tumble journey
From the East Side to the park
Just a fine and fancy ramble
But you can take the crosstown bus
If it's raining or it's cold
And the animals will love it if you do
If you do, now
Somethin' tells me it's all happening at the zoo
I do believe it
I do believe it's true
The monkeys stand for honesty
Giraffes are insincere
And the elephants are kindly but they're dumb
Orangutans are skeptical
Of changes in their cages
And the zookeeper is very fond of rum
Zebras are reactionaries
Antelopes are missionaries
Pigeons plot in secrecy
And hamsters turn on frequently
What a gas, you gotta come and see
At the zoo
At the zoo
At the zoo
At the zoo
At the zoo
At the zoo
At the zoo
At the zoo
Garfunkel's "At the Zoo" is a whimsical tune that celebrates the animal world and the joys of visiting the zoo. The song's first verse sets up the premise: "Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo." Garfunkel replies, "I do believe it / I do believe it's true." He goes on to describe the journey to the zoo as a "light and tumble journey" from the East Side to the park, and encourages listeners to take the crosstown bus if the weather is bad. Garfunkel then imagines the different personalities of the animals. According to him, monkeys are honest, giraffes are insincere, elephants are kind but dumb, orangutans are skeptical, and zebras are reactionaries. The song ends with a chorus of "At the zoo" repeated over and over again, urging the listener to come and see for themselves.

There is a rather dark message hidden in here actually. But you'd probably miss it even if you tried to find it.

Sitting on a airliner headed to Vietnam in 1967, i had a portable tape recorder and played this music as it reflected my feelings about the conflict I was about to enter.. As a elder my feelings about music are that it reflects our innermost feelings at a specific time

Glad you made it back!

It said this song was in 1968. So how did you listen to it in 1967?
@marlachristensen2076
@@davidthedeaf good question.
@marlachristensen2076
There is a song of which I believe depicts the sign of those times. I purchased the album in 1967, I believe, at the young age of eight or nine years old. I listened to this repeatably. It left a profound impression on the young me. Here is a song off of this album named "The Unknown Soldier". The name of the album is 'Waiting for the Sun' by a band named 'The Doors'.

My mom grew up with this album, and I have always grown up hearing this song on car rides. I now have that album as part of a hand me down collection for my records.
