I read once that the Johnny Mercer song I Remember You was written by him for her. They had had an affair when she was nineteen.
She ended up marrying someone else.
It's a lovely song.

That's true about "I Remember You.". Mercer's wife, Ginger, knew that and would not allow the song to be played in her presence. I love this song because I met a girl in highschool, and she and I had an intermittent romance for the next 30 years. But at the core of it was true friendship. We each thought of the other, "How can anybody BE like you?". Then we'd just laugh. I played this song with Judy and Johnny for my daughter when she was 8, and she thought it was a hoot. Listened to it at least 10 times!

Also, your playing this song for your daughter reminded me of the fun I had playing older songs(Crosby's "Swinging on a Star" comes to mind)and laughing with my son when he was a kid.
Although when I first read of your playing the song for your daughter, I was confused. I thought you'd played "I Remember You" for her😂.
NOW it makes sense.

What a funny, charming piece of music! One commenter doesn’t think it is Judy Garland, but although it doesn’t sound much like her, I’m willing to believe that’s because she would have been so young in 1940 and she was trying to disguise her voice. I hope it is the two of them. I always wanted to hear them singing together and I never have unless this is it! It’s definitely Johnny Mercer. Are you sure it’s Judy Garland?

Oddly, Mr Mercer actually sings this better than Judy does. It's not that she doesn't sing it well, it's just that he is perfect whilst that stunning sparkle is slightly absent for once from my all time favourite female singer, at least to my ears.

I admit that I want it to be Judy Garland, but if you consider she would only have been 18 in 1940, and that she was obviously trying to disguise her voice, couldn’t it be her? I always wanted to hear them singing together and never have unless this is the two of them. Theirs was such a heartbreaking love story; I always wondered if her life would have been easier if they could have married. She needed someone who loved her that much.
