Closing In
Garrett Williamson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

VERSE:
It starts off the same for every week
And ends with a game on PS3
Pick something right out of the drawer
Then hold it up against the floor
Spew some junk about no sex
Then a vegan comes just to say Gex
At the desk, look like a hoarder
Surrounded by some big blue border

I just want to break the mold, to not follow a path
But every week, my life involves mentioning Barrel Blast

PRE-CHORUS:
(It’s closing in) My screen is all burned in
(It’s closing in) I always have that stupid grin
(It’s closing in) And just like my virginity…

I’m worried this 1080p outline’s here for infinity

CHORUS:
I’m, on the border
Does my whole life need a giant watermark?
Of, starting over
I really truly never noticed something so stark?
Why, is it this way?
These are some deep questions, this is getting too philosophical for me

Blue from feeling like I’m suffocating

To lay it on the line, it’s closing in on me

OUTRO:
(It’s closing in) It’s always been this way?
(It’s closing in) Not sure if that’s okay…
(It’s closing in) Constantly, from day to day

To lay it on the line, it’s closing in on me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Garrett Williamson's song "Closing In" depict a sense of monotony and dissatisfaction with one's daily routine. The first verse sets the scene of a repetitive week, with the singer highlighting mundane activities like playing video games (specifically on a PS3) and randomly selecting objects from a drawer. There is a mention of avoiding sexual encounters and the unexpected arrival of a vegan, adding to the sense of unpredictability in an otherwise stagnant routine. The line "Surrounded by some big blue border" could be interpreted metaphorically, suggesting confinement or limitation within the singer's daily life.

The chorus hints at a deeper longing for change and a desire to break free from the pattern. The singer questions the necessity of a constant watermark (symbolizing a reminder or label) in their life. They express frustration at not noticing this restriction sooner and pose philosophical questions about why things are the way they are. The blue color mentioned in the chorus could represent feelings of suffocation or restriction.

In the pre-chorus, the singer reflects on their screen being "burned in," suggesting that their daily routine has become ingrained and unchanging. They admit to always having a "stupid grin," possibly indicating resignation or a lack of fulfillment. The mention of their virginity implies a lack of experience or growth, paralleling the stagnant nature of their life. They express concern that this 1080p (high-definition) outline, symbolizing their current existence, might last forever.

The outro reinforces the sense of entrapment and questions whether this has always been the singer's reality. They express uncertainty about whether it's acceptable or healthy to constantly feel closed in or confined. The repetitive nature of their days is emphasized, leaving them feeling like their options are limited and suffocated.

Overall, the lyrics of "Closing In" convey a longing for change and dissatisfaction with a monotonous and confining lifestyle. The song prompts reflection on the limitations placed upon oneself and the desire to break free from a repetitive existence.

NAF Projects

Fun fact
According to the 2021 book made for the charity bonanza that I somehow forgot the name of, Scott never even intended for this to be a grunge rock song. He literally just told Garret "yeah do whatever man, I don't care". So the fact that this fits so well is a complete mistake
