The Dance
Garth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I get this feeling that I can't explain
Every time I see your face or hear your name
I just go crazy, thinking, maybe this may be my chance
What would you say to me if I said "Baby, let's lay down and dance"

I got to tell you, girl, you drive me wild
Every time I see you dance and see that smile
My world gets hazy and I'm moving like I'm in a trance
Whoa, I know it's crazy, but baby, let's lay down and dance

When it comes to love my heart is black and it's blue
Swore I was through with romance
But girl you're something and I'm counting on you
You're my brand new second chance

My friends all tell me that I'm not your kind
They say I better pray your love is blind
You got to save me, I'm a victim of your circumstance
Whoa, I know it's crazy, but baby, let's lay down and dance

When it comes to love my heart is black and it's blue
Thought I was through with romance
But girl you're something and I've nothing to lose
You're my brand new second chance

I gots to tell you, girl, you drive me wild
I've never known no one with quite your style
I'm going crazy, thinking, baby, this may be my chance

What would you say to me if I said "Baby, let's lay down and dance"
Girl, I know it's crazy, but baby, let's lay down and dance

Overall Meaning

"The Dance" by Garth Brooks is a love song that speaks to the power of taking risks in relationships. The first verse opens with the singer expressing a feeling he cannot explain every time he sees the woman he loves. He admits to going crazy with the possibility of being able to dance with her, maybe as a chance to take it to the next level. The use of "crazy" acknowledges the vulnerability of the moment, but the invitation to dance represents the opportunity to surrender to love.

The second verse weaves doubt into the lyrics, with Garth revealing his heart as once broken, and thought to be black and blue in regards to romance. Despite this, he cannot resist the temptation of this new love, seeing her as an opportunity towards redemption. He is counting on her to be his second chance, where even though his friends and circumstances may indicate that he is not her type, he is willing to risk it all anyway.

The chorus is both a declaration of his love as well as an urgent plea to dance with her. The repetition of "baby let's lay down and dance" goes beyond just physical movement and speaks to the idea of making the most of the moment, even if it defies all reason. In the end, the feeling of being in love and the possibility of more is enough for the singer to take that chance and dance.

[Verse 1]
Lookin' back on the memory of
The dance we shared, beneath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye

[Chorus]
And now, I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain, but I'da had to miss
The dance

[Verse 2]
Holding you, I held everything
For a moment, wasn't I the king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey, who's to say, you know I might have changed it all

[Chorus]
And now, I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain, but I'da had to miss
The dance

I’m so so sorry for your loss. Unless you lose a child you cannot understand the pain. My stepdaughter passed. She was beautiful. My husband and I are raising her daughter. We got her at 10 mos old and she’s now 10 years old. Both feel like my biological children.

@jenniferwilhelm256

@@sheilaeagy3913 that's very cool that you are raising your stepdaughters child as your own. That's stepping up.🙏
