The Storm
Garth Brooks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She sits among the pieces of broken glass and photographs
Reluctantly releases the last of what was her past
It struck without a warning or did she just ignore the signs
In those dark clouds forming behind her silver lines.

Then the door it slammed like thunder and the tears they fell like rain.
And the warnings from her family whirl like a hurricane.
Oh, she's drowning in emotions and she cannot reach the shore.
She's alive but can she survive the storm.

A broken jewel box dancer lies in pieces down the hall.
She's finding out the answers don't change nothing at all.
It's time that she stopped searching for who's to blame or what went wrong.
The only thing for certain is he's gone,
she's got to move on.

Then the door it slammed like thunder and the tears they fell like rain.
And the warnings from her family whirl like a hurricane.
She's drowning in emotions and she cannot reach the shore.
She's alive but can she survive the storm.

Someday days just roll on by without a gray cloud in the sky.
She keeps telling herself, "I will make it on my own".
And her friends they've all gone back to their lives,
Thinking she will be alright,
As she races through the night to make it home.

The door it slams like thunder and the tears they fall like rain.
And the warnings from her family whirl like a hurricane.

Oh, she's drowning in emotions and she cannot reach the shore.
She's alive but can she survive the storm.

Overall Meaning

Garth Brooks's song The Storm is a powerfully emotive ballad that deals with the aftermath of a devastating breakup. The opening lines of the song describe the singer sitting among the pieces of broken glass and photographs, having reluctantly let go of her past. The metaphorical storm that descends upon her is sudden and all-consuming. The door slams like thunder and the tears fall like rain, leaving her drowning in a sea of emotion that she cannot seem to escape. The warnings from her family and friends whirl around her like a hurricane, adding to the sense of chaos and confusion that she feels.

The middle section of the song sees the singer trying to make sense of what has happened to her. She finds that answers are elusive and that searching for who is to blame or what went wrong is ultimately futile. The only thing that she can be sure of is that he is gone, and she must try to move on. As she does so, the storm continues to rage around her, and she struggles to keep her head above water.

The final section of the song offers a glimpse of hope. The singer realizes that someday the storm will pass and that she will emerge stronger for having weathered it. She tells herself that she will make it on her own and races through the night to make it home. The storm may have left her battered and bruised, but she is alive, and that in itself is reason to keep fighting.

Overall, The Storm is a poignant and powerful song that captures the raw emotion of heartbreak and the resilience of the human spirit. It reminds us that no matter how great the storm, we have the strength within us to survive and overcome it.

Man, this song reminds me of the relationship with my abusive ex. I thought he was so charming at first, that he hung the moon, after being beaten, kicked, my head thrown through the front door window by him, countless times of saying I was done and going to leave just to have him threaten that he would burn my family's houses down. It took drastic measures but finally Enough was enough! I suffered from a lot of PTSD and self hate moments. To this day the thought of him makes my stomach churn. I have moved on got married and expecting a surprise baby! Remember you will heal and you can survive!!! This song hit me deep in my soul. The countless times of drowning and not being able to reach that shore!
