Hair
Gavin Creel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She asks me why
I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night
Hair, that's a fright
I'm hairy high and low
Don't ask me why, don't know
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead, darling

Gimme a head with hair
Long, beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen waxen
Gimme it down to there, hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere, daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair

Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow my hair

Let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
Oh, a home for the fleas (yeah)
A hive for the bees (oh yeah)
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder of my

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair

Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow my hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy, shining
Gleaming, steaming flaxen waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied

Oh, say can you see my eyes
If you can then my hair's too short

Down to here
Down to there
I want hair down to where it stops by itself

Do do do do do do
Do do do do do do do do

They'll be ga-ga at the go-go when they see me in my toga
My toga made of blonde, brilliantined, biblical hair
My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah, I adore it
Hallelujah, Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair

Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow my hair

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair

Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow my hair

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair

Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow my hair

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair

Overall Meaning

The song "Hair" by Gavin Creel is an ode to unconventional physical appearances and the idea that beauty is not limited to societal norms. The singer is a hairy man who embraces his unconventional appearance, and in fact, takes great pride in it. The lyrics emphasize the rarity of his look and some of the benefits (such as giving a home to the fleas). The song also mentions the desire for long hair as a symbol of beauty and freedom from societal expectations.

The repeated chorus of "Hair, hair, hair" in various pitches and tones gives off a rebellious and energetic vibe. The song implies a sense of nonconformity to societal norms and a drive to break free from the restrictions of what is considered "normal." It also acknowledges the need for individualism and the statement that people can be beautiful in whatever way they choose.

Interestingly, Gavin Creel's version of the song comes from the musical Hair, which premiered in 1967 during a time of social and political change in the U.S. The show featured a cast of diverse individuals who were often seen as outcasts, promoting anti-establishment values and free love. The musical was radical and had a significant impact on the counter-culture movement during the 1960s. This song is the epitome of the musical's main message, and has become an anthem for those seeking to reject conformity.

Tears are falling on my face. The voice of the main blonde singer is so powerful and she has so much feeling. Really beautiful!!

Outmost Essential

She is literally the best.

"The Flesh Failures" separates singers who can handle unusual rhythms from those who can't, much as "Carol of the Bells" separates orchestras who can keep the tempo fast enough to make four repetitions of a theme interesting from those who can't. It is essential to perform it just before "Let the Sunshine In" to keep the latter from turning into a joyous celebration of the sort seen in that PSA from 1970. The two together are crying out to be sung at the White House fence.

Which is why I'm utterly frustrated by this Dutch travel agency that completely strips 'Let the Sunshine in' from its context to use it as a ploy to sell horribly dull vacation packages.

I am famously callous and my kids are constantly joking about the Marine Corps beating all emotions out of me. What they don't realize, having been born into this era (1964) and having a Marine father, I watched the flag draped coffins come home, I attended to many funerals for neighbors, and EVERY time I hear this song, it brings me to tears.......

I was fortunate enough to see this revival 3 times. They absolutely nailed it, The period, the style, the 60's vibe...and the talent on that stage! Oh my god the talent. Few things are worth the price of Broadway tickets nowadays, this experience however was absolutely priceless. I can't wait for the next revival! ☮️💜🕊🌈

This song is haunting and powerful.

From the look of pure terror on poor Claude’s face knowing that he could die and the dropping of the flag…to the powerful voices emphasized here…

How much exactly have we changed since the 60’s? In regards to our attitudes to war during this time?

During this time the Iraq war was going on, and…well…the parallels between then and at that time were very clear.

SoulShines4U

Always incredibly moving, chills + tears, no matter what production you're watching. The music speaks for itself. ✌ 💜
