Different for Girls

What you do to me
You like coming close
Til you can barely breathe
You're out with your friends
But it's only you
That looking at, thinking baby yes I do
Is it even fair'
And are we to blame'
Before we're too deep
And I don't even know your name
Just another night
Of another week
You can groove so hot
But don't have to speak
There's just no way
That I'm gonna hear the words you say
'Cause you know that boys don't cry
Why you been hung up on every other guy'
[Chorus]
And I know that it's different for girls who care
But as long as we are headed somewhere
I know it's different for girls
That's what you are
Yea though I know I just don't understand
Why it's different for girls
So we have a few
And a little more
And a little more
And a little more
Til we both have gone
And you just give in
Yea but go til we forget about the shape we're in
The night is young
The dress is new
And so too much time
Thinkin' what I need to you
And girl
We're losing control
You know there's'
There's just no way
That I'm gonna hear the words you say
'Cause you know that boys don't cry
Why you been hung up on every other guy'
[Chorus]
And I know that it's different for girls who care
But as long as we are headed somewhere
I know it's different for girls
That's what you are
Yea though I know I just don't understand
Why it's different for girls
I don't understand why
I'm searching and I need to know
Just take me by the hand
Why' To get a little love I'd risk it all
All my trouble, didn't care I am the weakest
I'm in trouble and I really need some help
But there's just no way
That I'm gonna hear the words you say
'Cause you know that boys don't cry
Why you been hung up on every other guy'
[Chorus]
And I know that it's different for girls who care
But as long as we are headed somewhere
I know it's different for girls
That's what you are
Yea though I know I just don't understand
Why it's different for girls
All this pain and suffering
Yea though I know I just don't understand
Why it's different for girls
Headed somewhere
Is it headed somewhere
Tell me if we're headed somewhere
In Gavin DeGraw's song "Different for Girls", the singer is expressing confusion and frustration over the different expectations and experiences that men and women have in relationships. The song opens with the singer admitting to being affected by the woman's closeness to him, even though they don't know each other well. He wonders if it's fair for him to feel this way, and whether they're both to blame for the situation. The man acknowledges that while they're out together, he won't be able to hear the words she says, as he believes that boys are not supposed to be emotional.
As the night wears on, the couple continues to drink and lose themselves in the moment. The singer acknowledges that despite his confusion and frustration, he is willing to risk it all for a little bit of love, even if it means feeling weak. The song concludes with the line 'Tell me if we're headed somewhere', leaving the listener with the sense that the singer isn't certain about what the future holds for their relationship.
Overall, "Different for Girls" is a reflection on the double standards and gendered expectations that exist in romantic relationships. The singer is struggling to understand why men are expected to be strong and emotionless, while women are often allowed to be more vulnerable and expressive. Through his lyrics, DeGraw highlights the need for more open and honest communication between partners, regardless of gender.
