Silver Bells
Gavin DeGraw Lyrics

Dressed in holiday style
In the air there's a feeling
Of Christmas
Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day
Strings of street lights
Even stop lights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush home with their treasures
Hear the snow crunch
See the kids bunch
This is Santa's big scene
And above all this bustle, you'll hear
Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day
The lyrics to Gavin DeGraw's "Silver Bells" describe the bustling activity of a city during Christmastime. The song emphasizes the joyful atmosphere, as pedestrians bustle along the sidewalks with holiday decorations and Christmas shopping bags. The air is filled with a tangible sense of excitement, which is heightened by the sound of laughter and the meeting of new faces. The song emphasizes the feelings of warmth and kindness that emerge during the holiday season through the extended metaphor of silver bells ringing on every street corner. The sound of the bells can be heard above the sounds of the city, reminding people of the spirit of Christmas.
The song also emphasizes the festive colors that light up the city, specifically through the red and green stop lights and street lights hanging overhead. Even with the cold crunch of snow underfoot, and the rush of holiday shoppers carrying their treasures, the bright lights and warm atmosphere unite everyone in the shared experience of Christmas. The result is a feeling of unity, with the silver bells ringing as a reminder that Christmas is not just a time for presents or decorations, but is something more ethereal that transcends shopping malls and city streets.
