James won Ireland's answer to the Mercury (the Choice Music Prize for 'Song of the Year') and saw his debut EP ('Say Hello') remain on the Irish chart for over 6 months. This rise and development in his home market has gained James sell-out headline dates and wider support tours with the likes of Lianne La Havas, Beth Orton, Kodaline and Marina & The Diamonds.
A snapshot of this ascent, 'Live at Whelans' is a selection of new and old songs performed in the stripped-back environment of a rapturously-received hometown show. The first track to be lifted from it, 'Nervous', is a pin-drop account of a one-sided relationship: from that initial fear of your first meeting to the gradual realisation, by the end of the song, that perhaps they were never who you thought they were (and it's best to forget about them).
James released his eagerly-anticipated debut album, ‘Bitter Pill’ on March 11th 2016 – having already gone Top 5, been certified Platinum and winner of Choice Music Prize’s ‘Song of the Year’ in his native Ireland in 2013 and 2016. Following a sold-out London show at KOKO, support across Spotify (Spotlight Artists for 2016), Radio 1, Virgin Radio, Beats 1 and Radio X, Gavin had an extensive UK tour, European tour, US tour and Australian dates, that featured Shepherd’s Bush Empire on October 7th 2016 in London and 3Arena on December 2016 in Dublin. Gavin has over 150 million total streams on Spotify already and live performances on Late Late Show with James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel Live, BBC One Show and C’est A Vous.
I don't know why

I don't want anybody else but you
No one can ever add up to
What you are
The simple words
That I can never say to you
Things that I can never do
When I was younger
But I don't know
Which way the wind blows
But I know I'll be alright
And I don't know
If you think I'm crazy
But if you say maybe I
I'd say love don't wait in line
No, love don't wait in line
If I say
I don't care what you do with him
If every time I lose you win
Then I'd be lying
But I'd better learn
Oh, I'd better learn to sink or swim
'Cause the pieces of my heart are getting dim
But I'll find the light
I don't know
Which way the wind blows
But I know I'll be alright
No I don't know
If you think I'm crazy
But if you say maybe I
I'd say love don't wait in line
No, love don't wait in line ooh
Girl I don't know
Which way the wind blows
But I know I'll be alright
Ooh I don't know
If you think I'm crazy
But if you say maybe I
I'd say times they change
And our lives they rearrange
We were just a burning flame
With bad timing
No, but love don't wait in line
No, love don't wait in line
In line, ooh
The song “I Don’t Know Why” by Gavin James is a heartfelt ballad about his love for a girl who he cannot let go of. Throughout the lyrics, he professes his love and admiration for her, but also acknowledges the uncertainty and fear that he feels. The chorus, “I don’t know which way the wind blows, but I know I’ll be alright, and I don’t know if you think I’m crazy, but if you say maybe I’d say love don’t wait in line” encapsulates the idea that love is unpredictable and uncertain, but if given the chance, he would take the risk because love doesn’t wait for anyone.
The verses describe the singer’s feelings of inadequacy, feeling trapped by the fear of not being able to express his love in the way that he wants to. He regrets not telling her how he feels before, but he vows to find the courage to do so now, even if it means sinking or swimming. He acknowledges that their relationship is not perfect, as he previously lied about not caring what she does with someone else, but he now realizes the gravity of his emotions.
The song is emotional and relatable, as it taps into feelings of uncertainty, fear, and regret. It highlights the importance of taking risks in love, even if mistakes have been made in the past.
