In 1954, I was just 13 years old; a working class kid growing up in a suburban New Jersey town. Like most kids my age, I listened to pop music on the radio, but one night I was turning the tuning dial on my radio and I happened to land on a small radio station coming out of Newark that played music unlike anything I’d heard before. Rhythm and Blues !!! I was hooked!! “Gee” by the Crows was one of the first that changed my life forever more.

I lived in a very small town in the interior of BC in 1954. Amazing how this tune was on the only jukebox in town. I used to buy a Coke and spend all my apple-picking money playing this song over and over. Then I discovered the flip, I Love You So. There were no sounds like this in Canada at that time. I can still hear these tunes in my head today.

This was the first Rock and Roll hit on the pop charts. Ever since Rocket 88 in 1952 rock had been popular on the R&B charts, but this was the first rock song to hit the top 40 in the pop charts.

There is a lot of misinformation floating around about what is/is not rock and roll, let's clear up some of these myths. The first Pop hit that became known as a rock and roll song was Bill Haley's Crazy Man, Crazy a R&B song that hit the Pop charts on May 23, 1953 at No. 12, though Gee by the Crows was also released in the Summer of 1953 it did not chart until February 1954. One thing that is certain is that what became known as Rock and Roll emerged in 1953 but was called R&B, though, Alan Freed referred to all R&B as rock and roll, the music industry did not adopt the term until later, the exact date is still debated.

As a teen in the '70's, I got hooked on the groundbreaking music of the '50s, Classic Rock-n-Roll, R&B, some Rockabilly, and Doo Wop, thanks in large part to American Graffiti and Happy Days. This is considered to be the very first Doo Wop song, and it has remained one of the very best.

Today's music draws on the best of all the old music doo-wop R&B rockabilly jazz blues.
I actually pity people who think that there's no good music being made today because that means they're not going out to see these bands that putting out Kick-Ass music and have been over the last 60 years. It's a shame you've missed some really good music in that time.
I was lucky enough to be interested in new music from an early age and went to hundreds of shows. It's been an awesome ride. I never got to see any doo-wop bands because I'm a little too young but I go to Gospel Fest in Chicago every year. Those people know how to rock. That's where all the doo wop artist came from anyway.

First heard this at Bovingdon AFB UK NCO club on the juke box. I was about 8 or 9 and was taken there for some ice cream with an AF family who lived over the road. This is I guess a cross between Jazz and R & B. We used to drop UK farthings into the coke machine to get a Dime coke bottle out of the machine. I reckon the NCO club ended up with many Farthings from the UK. We lay on the grass at the end of the Runway between the Traffic lights as the planes came in overhead. Happy days. (just a thought, then we used to ride miles on our bikes when I was about 10 or 11 can you imagine now a child riding a bike some 10 miles from home to watch planes)
