Look
Gem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We sail, Past and future memories gone by
You relive them
They want to look but still you close your eyes
You can’t see them anyway

A slave, your life they put you on display
You can’t forgive them
Tonight, another past life paradise
But you can’t relive it if you try

The perfect crime, The heart lives on by the body lies
I wonder why do you refuse to roll over and die
Wait for my sign and I can give you the perfect time
My, My, My, it’s good to see your mind as fucked up as mine

All the things that play with my mind
Turn to skeletons when I close my eyes tonight

Let’s reconcile, the soul we lost by another mile
It makes me smile to see you laugh as a suffer a while
Could you be wild, or just a queen of the corpses piled
We’re in denial. We’re nocturnal pedophiles

Seeking shelter in your heart
tore my world apart and now I wait for you

All the things that play with my mind
Turn to skeletons when I close my eyes tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "Look" by GEM seems to explore the theme of escaping reality by closing one's eyes to the past and present, and seeking comfort in memories and the potential for a perfect future. The first verse sets the tone, describing how memories can haunt someone yet they still avoid confronting them, shutting their eyes to avoid staring at them. They appear to sail through life, detached and removed from reality. The second verse gives an insight into what lies beneath this facade - a life where they are forced to be on display like a slave, unable to forget the past. However, in the present, they try to create a paradise by reliving another past, but realize it's futile.

The chorus seems to ponder the idea of a perfect crime where the heart continues to beat even when the body dies. The lyrics express a desire to understand why the subject refuses to give in and move on, with the singer offering help in the form of a sign for the perfect time. The last two lines suggest that the singer and subject share a troubled mind, with the subject's skeletons coming to life when they shut their eyes at night.

The bridge appears to attempt to reconcile the loss of soul, with the singer suggesting that laughter in the face of suffering could be a sign of being wild or a "queen of corpses piled." The final line continues to suggest that both the singer and subject are in denial about their true selves, referring to themselves as "nocturnal pedophiles."

Overall, "Look" by GEM captures the idea of an individual who is haunted by past demons and struggling to reconcile their present with their desired future.
