The roots of Gene lay in a band called Spin, which featured guitarist Steve Mason and drummer Matt James. Spin disbanded after their career was sidetracked by their bassist's injury in a car crash, yet Mason and James continued playing together, recruiting bassist Kevin Miles through a mutual friend. The trio eventually met Welsh native Martin Rossiter, and the quartet formed Gene in 1993. Over the course of the next few months, the band wrote a batch of songs and had performed a number of concerts by the end of the year. A pair of music journalists, Keith Cameron and Roy Wilkinson, formed the Costermonger label in order to release Gene's debut single, "For the Dead," in April 1994. Nearly every copy of the limited-edition release sold out within the first week, and Gene soon became favorites of the British music weeklies. That July, "Be My Light, Be My Guide" became a number one hit on the indie charts, and Gene had emerged as one of the leading new bands of the burgeoning Britpop movement. Major-label interest beckoned, and the group signed with Polydor, who subsidized Costermonger in the U.K. An acclaimed third single, "Sleep Well Tonight," followed in September, and in January of 1995, Gene was named Best New Act at NME's Brat Awards.
Until the release of the group's debut album, Olympian, in the spring of 1995, Gene had continued to build momentum, partially because Martin Rossiter had adopted Morrissey's technique of giving articulate, outrageous and witty interviews. Olympian, however, was greeted with mixed reviews, and although the group had a sizable fan base -- the album debuted in the Top Ten -- they were soon overshadowed by the legions of groups that popped up in the wake of Blur and Oasis' success. Even so, "Haunted by You" and "Olympian" both became Top 20 hits. Early in 1996, To See the Lights, a collection of B-sides and BBC sessions, was released in England. For the remainder of the year, Gene was quiet, preparing their second album, Drawn to the Deep End. "Fighting Fit" was released as a teaser in the fall and became a Top Ten hit, but Drawn to the Deep End didn't follow through on its success. Although it debuted in the Top Ten upon its release in early 1997, it was greeted with decidedly mixed reviews and quickly fell down the charts, although the group's core audience remained loyal. By the new millennium, the band was without a label. They founded Contra and issued the live set Rising for Sunset: Live at the Troubadour in 2000. The album went almost unnoticed among the indie scene, however a true comeback loomed ahead. In mid-summer 2002, Gene emerged with Libertine, their strongest material since Olympian. A late summer/early fall trek across America coincided with the release.

Haunted By You
Gene Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just to hide
And to avoid the times
When you stood
At my side
Still battered by the tide
A wreck exposed
At my door
So get up from my floor
For you, you've had your time
Your chance has gone
You're not so strong
Your words they cannot harm me now
But with all the things that I've said
I'm still haunted by you
In every town, every place
You're waiting
On my tongue lies disgrace
Still haunted by you
Yes you, you're in my way
The opening of Gene's song "Haunted By You" reveals the singer's struggle to come to terms with a past relationship. The lyrics express the singer's emotional state, as they try to avoid the memories of the person they once loved by crossing the road. The second verse suggests that the relationship ended badly, and the person they loved once expressed their strength through their words. However, the singer appears to have moved on, telling the person that their chance has gone and their words cannot harm them now.
Despite their attempts to move on, the singer admits to still feeling haunted by the person they once loved, with the chorus emphasizing this point. The person still seems to have a powerful effect on the singer, with the line "On my tongue lies disgrace" hinting that the singer has said things they regret. The phrase "You're in my way" suggests that the memories of the past relationship are blocking the singer's ability to move on, and the person continues to occupy their thoughts and emotions.
In summary, "Haunted By You" is a song about the struggles of letting go of a past relationship and moving on, even if the memories of that person continue to haunt the singer.

I cross the road
I move to the other side of the road to avoid you
Just to hide
I hide from you
And to avoid the times
I try to avoid the moments
When you stood
When you were beside me
At my side
Next to me
Still battered by the tide
Still affected by the ups and downs of life
A wreck exposed
I am vulnerable and exposed
At my door
At my doorstep or in my life
My eyes they cannot lie
I cannot hide my true feelings
So get up from my floor
Leave my life
For you, you've had your time
Our time together has passed
Your chance has gone
You no longer have an opportunity with me
You're not so strong
You're not as strong as you think
Your words they cannot harm me now
Your words no longer affect me
But with all the things that I've said
Despite everything I've stated
I'm still haunted by you
I'm still affected by your presence
In every town, every place
Regardless of where I go
You're waiting
You're still present
On my tongue lies disgrace
I still feel ashamed of what has passed between us
Still haunted by you
I'm still affected by your presence
Yes you, you're in my way
You're still blocking my path
