Something In The Water
Gene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They must have put
Something in the water
'Cause something's not in order
And that's why I'm alone

They said love
Love was my arena
And God you should have seen her
So why is she now gone?

Let me invite you in
Look around and feel at home
But let me insist on one thing
Tell me if I'm wrong

They must have put
Something in the water
'Cause something's not in order
And that's why I'm alone

They said love
Love was my arena
But God you should have seen her
So why is she now gone?

It read "most desirable
A place with modern lines"
They said, "you'd a mug to lose it
This is the time to buy."

I know they put
Something in the water
'Cause something's not in order
And that's why I'm alone

They said love
Love was my arena
But God, you should have seen her
So why is she now gone?

I know that I'll be calling up the council
Halls of power in my sights
It's my right to know the truth

I know they let me invite you in
It's soon to be your home
It really has everything
But are you happy on your own?

I know they put
Something in the water
'Cause something's not in order
And that's why I'm alone

They said love
Love was my arena

But God, you should have seen her
So why is she now gone?

Overall Meaning

In Gene's song "Something In The Water," the singer is questioning his current state of being alone despite the fact that he was once in love. The opening lines of the song, "They must have put something in the water, 'Cause something's not in order And that's why I'm alone," suggest that there was some external force that caused his love to disappear. He then reminisces about the past and how love was once his arena and how everyone should have seen her. But despite his efforts to make everything perfect, she's now gone.

The song continues with a reference to buying a new property, and how the estate agent is pushing the idea of purchasing it because it's the most desirable place to live. But even the thought of having a perfect home couldn't fill the void that was left by his lost love. The singer is determined to find out the truth and is ready to call up the council and halls of power to get answers. But in the end, the question remains unanswered; what happened to his love?

The meaning behind the lyrics is that sometimes things can take a sudden turn, and we find ourselves in a state of confusion and loneliness, despite our efforts to make things work. Sometimes things happen that are beyond our control, and the only thing we can do is learn to live with them.
