Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer
Gene Autry & The Pinafores Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph, with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
You'll go down in history!"

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph, with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
You'll go down in history!"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" tell the story of a unique reindeer named Rudolph who is ostracized by his peers, but ultimately proves his worth by leading Santa's sleigh on a foggy Christmas Eve. The song lists the names of the other reindeer, acknowledging their importance and familiarity before introducing Rudolph as "the most famous reindeer of all." The catchy chorus describes Rudolph's distinguishing feature - his glowing red nose. The next verse describes how the other reindeer used to make fun of Rudolph and exclude him from their games because of his appearance, highlighting the theme of bullying and the importance of inclusivity.
