Kathleen
Gene Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ever flaming eyes of green
But the loneliest you have seen
Stands there barefoot by the shore
Like a widows walk that hears their dour

And a voice she's heard not seen
For many years she's sailed alone
Merry but one day when he
Went a-whalin' on and then goes on, his Kathleen

Silently she holds within
Like a proud and beautiful she is
Faith like no-one ever said
And her reasons won't belay her fears

Would the cruel stormy sea
Take her love and just never tell life when
And each day, Kathleen
She will beg the spirits of the wind, for Kathleen

Why she'd be upon her knee
Begs the spirit of the wind

Send him safely home from sea
So that love undecided can bloom again, for Kathleen

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gene Clark’s song Kathleen tell a story of a woman named Kathleen who is waiting for her lover to return from a whaling expedition. The first lines of the song describe Kathleen’s captivating eyes that seem to be on fire, but despite her alluring appearance, Kathleen is the loneliest person one has ever seen. She stands barefoot by the shore, reminiscent of a widow waiting for her husband to come back from the sea. For many years, Kathleen has sailed the seas alone, but she always hoped to be reunited with her lover, until one day when he went off whaling and never returned. The rest of the song speaks of her faith and her fears - her faith in the spirits of the wind whom she begs to bring her lover safely back home, and her fear that the cruel and stormy sea might have taken him from her forever.

The song Kathleen is a poignant and imaginative representation of the powerlessness and anguish that people feel when they must wait for their loved ones, uncertain if they will ever return. The lyrics evoke a range of emotions, from hope to despair, and the last lines of the song express Kathleen’s longing for her lover, and her desire for their love to bloom again.

Whenever I pick a Gene Clark CD off the shelf it is Gypsy Angel,a beautiful album of stripped down demos ,Gene with acoustic guitar and harp .He was always my favourite Byrd, over shadowed by the talents of McGuinn and Crosby but this album shows he had so much more to offer,God bless you Gene.

Agree about the album. But disagree about the over shadowed. This guy was a higher plane of song writing .
