Gene Krupa (January 15, 1909 – October 16, 1973) was a famous and influential Polish-American jazz and big band drummer, known for his highly energetic and flamboyant style.
Krupa was born in Chicago, Illinois. He began playing professionally in the mid 1920s with bands in Wisconsin.
He made his first recordings in 1927, with a band under the leadership of banjoist Eddie Condon and "fixer" (and sometime singer, who did not appear on the records), Red McKenzie: these sides are now recognised as the first, and definitive, examples of white "Chicago Style" jazz. The numbers recorded at that session were: 'China Boy', 'Sugar', 'Nobody's Sweetheart' and 'Liza'.
In 1943, Krupa was arrested for possession of marijuana and was given a brief jail term. After his release, Krupa reorganized his band with a big string section, featuring Charlie Ventura on sax. It was one of the largest dance bands of the era, sometimes containing up to forty musicians. He gradually cut down the size of the band in the late 1940s, and from 1951 on led a trio or quartet. He appeared regularly with the Jazz At the Philharmonic shows.
Krupa largely went into retirement in the late 1960s, although occasionally played in public until shortly before his death from leukemia in Yonkers, New York. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetary in Calumet City, Illinois.
I Love You Much Too Much

I've known it from the start
But yet my love is such
I can't control my heart
I love you much too much
I ask myself what for
Then, darling, when we touch
Perhaps I hold your heart too tightly
But who am I to say
If I should hold it lightly
It might slip away
I love you much too much
You've never really known
I love you oh so much
I'm yours alone.
I love you much too much, I love you much too much
I've known it from the start, right from the start
But yet my love is such,
I can't control my heart
I love you much too much
I love you too much oh my dear
I've known it from the start
But, but, but my love is such
I can't control my heart
Perhaps I hold your heart too tightly
But who am I to say
If I should hold it lightly
It might slip away
I love you much too much
You've never really known
Oh no, oh no you've never known
I love you oh so much, so much
I'm yours alone, alone.
The lyrics of Gene Krupa and His Orchestra's song I Love You Much Too Much express a deeply emotional and passionate love which the singer is unable to control. The singer admits to loving their partner too much from the very beginning of their relationship, and despite questioning why they feel that way, they can't help loving their partner even more when they are close. The singer acknowledges that they might be holding their partner's heart too tightly, but they fear that if they loosen their grip, their love might slip away. The song ends with the singer declaring that their love is all-encompassing and that their partner belongs to them alone.
The lyrics of the song are consistently framed by the idea of an overpowering love that the singer cannot seem to control. The phrase "I love you much too much" is central to every verse, immersing the song in a fervent and obsessive tone. The singer is also conscious of how their strong feelings might be received by their partner, which adds a layer of vulnerability to their declarations of love. The line "I ask myself what for" suggests that the singer might feel guilty for loving their partner so much, as if it were an irrational and selfish feeling. The refrain "I'm yours alone" is their way of conveying that they are committed to their partner entirely, and that their overwhelming love is simply an intense manifestation of their devotion.
Overall, Gene Krupa and His Orchestra's song I Love You Much Too Much is a poignant and heartfelt ode to uncontrollable love. The lyrics are impassioned and unabashedly emotional, offering a portrait of love that is fervent, vulnerable, and full of risk.
