Twenty Flight Rock
Gene Vincent & Eddie Cochran Lyrics

When it comes to rockin' she's the queen
We love to dance on a Saturday night
All alone where I can hold her tight
But she lives on the twentiest floor uptown
The elevator's broken down
So I walked one, two flight, three flight, four
Up on the twelfth I started to drag
Fifteenth floor I'm a-ready to sag
Get to the top, I'm too tired to rock
When she calls me up on the telephone
Say, come on over honey, I'm all alone
I said, baby you're mighty sweet
But I'm in bed with the achin' feet
This went on for a couple of days
But I couldn't stay away
Well they sent to Chicago for repairs
Till it's a-fixed I'm a-usin' the stairs
Hope they hurry up before it's too late
Want my baby too much to wait
All this climbin' is a-gettin' me down
They'll find my corpse draped over a rail
But I climbed one, two flight, three flight four
Twenty-Flight Rock is a song about a young man who has fallen deeply in love with a girl who lives uptown on the twentieth floor but the elevator is broken, forcing him to climb up the stairs to visit her. He describes how exhausted he gets after climbing just a few flights of stairs, yet he still perseveres to get to her. The song is a playful representation of the lengths someone will go to see someone they love, even if it means climbing up twenty flights of stairs.
The song was written by Ned Fairchild and Eddie Cochran for the film, The Girl Can't Help It, in which it was performed by Eddie Cochran. Gene Vincent also recorded the song, and his version became popular in the UK after it was played on a UK tour by a young skiffle band called The Quarrymen, who subsequently became The Beatles. The Beatles also used a variation of the guitar riff in the intro of their song "I Saw Her Standing There," which they recorded in 1963.
