Do You Hear What I Hear?
Gentri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Said the night wind to the little lamb:
"Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite"
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy:
"Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea"

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king:
"Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king
Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold"

Said the king to the people everywhere:
"Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people everywhere!
Listen to what I say!
The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night

He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light"

Overall Meaning

The song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" as performed by the group Gentri consists of four verses, each one representing a conversation between different characters - the night wind and a little lamb, the lamb and a shepherd boy, the shepherd boy and a king, and the king and his people. The first verse introduces the idea of a star in the sky which is visible to the little lamb, but only because the night wind points it out to her. The star is described as having a tail "as big as a kite," a whimsical image that creates a sense of wonder and magic. This leads to the second verse, in which the lamb asks the shepherd boy if he can hear a song ringing through the sky. The use of the phrase "ringing through the sky" creates an almost tangible sense of sound and adds to the overall sensory experience of the song. Again, the description of the voice being "as big as the sea" emphasizes the idea of something massive and awe-inspiring.

The third verse introduces a new character, the mighty king. He is asked by the shepherd boy if he is aware of a child who is shivering in the cold. This sets up the idea of the child as vulnerable and in need of protection, which contrasts with the king's regal power and wealth, as symbolized by the mention of his "palace warm." The shepherd boy suggests bringing silver and gold as gifts for the child, which creates a sense of nobility and reverence for the child. Finally, the fourth verse has the king addressing his people, urging them to listen to his message of peace and hope. The child is identified as the source of this goodness and light, and the repetition of these phrases creates a sense of optimism and joy.

Overall, "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is a song about the power of communication and the way that different voices and perspectives can come together to create something magical and transformative. The focus on a child in need of protection also adds a sense of urgency and compassion to the song, making it a timeless holiday classic that still resonates with audiences today.

I've been following you since the beginning. Someone else wrote, "Every time GENTRI performs, the world is left brighter." That really sums it up. It's not JUST the music, but the three of you (and Steve) are really amazing souls and that's what comes through most clearly. Thank you. Love, Peace, Blessing from Portland, OR

@GENTRI I make a point of sharing your most meaningful songs on my Facebook page. There is no way I can even begin to tell you how much comfort you bring to my heart these days. Since the restrictions started with COVID-19 my health has been on a steady decline and it's your wonderful music and messages that keep me going on a daily basis. I could only dream of meeting the 3 of you in person at some point but I realize that is highly unlikely. I am not nor have I ever been a religious person however I do have my very strong beliefs in living as a Christian in my every day life. Thank you so very much for all that you do. I feel truly blessed to be able to listen to your awesome voices and watch your wonderful videos although they bring tears to my face ever time.
