After the Beatles stopped touring in 1966, George started writing more songs than could be fitted onto the albums so that by the time of the split he had built up a collection of songs, some used on his debut solo album, All Things Must Pass. The album, released in 1970, contains the two-time number one hit, "My Sweet Lord".
Harrison is also credited for creating music benefits, notably the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. Harrison played beside Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, and Leon Russell to a crowd of 40,000 in Madison Square Garden, New York. The show raised over $240,000 benefiting the George Harrison Fund for Bangladesh relief.
Harrison went on to release several successful solo albums, and in the late 1980s collaborated with Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, in a group called Traveling Wilburys. The group released two albums. Later, Harrison reunited with the other two surviving Beatles, after John Lennon's murder in 1980, to produce two final Beatles records, "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love" featuring the voice of Lennon, taken from home demos provided by Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. The three Beatles also co-wrote a massive autobiography and television special, both titled "The Beatles Anthology."
Before his death, Harrison conceived of a Cirque du Soleil show, "Love," featuring remixes of Beatles music which were overseen by Beatles producer George Martin.
Harrison died on November 29, 2001 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a wife and son, Olivia and Dhani Harrison. His last album, Brainwashed, was released posthumously and featured the single "Any Road".
A benefit concert in Harrison's memory was played on 29 November 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall. The star-studded event (featuring Eric Clapton and Monty Python, as well as former band mates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr) was released on the DVD double-album, Concert for George.
Rocking Chair in Hawaii
George Harrison Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Going down to the river gonna take me my rocking chair
And if those blues don't leave me
Gonna rock on away from here
If you want me woman please don't act so shy
If you want me woman please don't pass me by
I love those sideways glances
I see inside your eyes, the Baba's Sai
The reasons why I love you
So if you're still busy hiding
What it is you've got
If you're frightened of losing
What you like a lot
You may be cruisin' backwards
While thinking that you're not
I see into your eyes, the Baba Sais
The reasons why I love you
So if you don't get the picture
You won't know what I feel
If you don't get the picture
Then you won't have a depth of field
You may be going someplace
Someplace you've already been
In George Harrison's song "Rocking Chair In Hawaii," the lyrics suggest someone seeking solace and comfort from the blues by heading down to the river and sitting in their rocking chair. The rocking chair symbolizes a place of comfort, where someone can rock away their worries and troubles. The lyrics suggest that this person is trying to find a way to escape their pain and suffering. They are hoping that by sitting in their rocking chair by the river, the blues will leave them and they can move on from whatever is causing them sadness.
The second verse suggests a romantic interest. The person is pleading with their love interest to not be shy and to make their feelings known. They love the way their love interest looks at them with sideways glances and finding comfort in their shoulder and thigh. However, there is a sense of frustration in the lyrics, as the person is worried that their love interest is hiding something or is frightened of losing something they like. There is a sense of urgency in the lyrics as they implore their love interest not to miss out on what they have together.
Overall, the lyrics to "Rocking Chair In Hawaii" suggest a person seeking solace from their troubles and finding comfort in their love interest. They are searching for peace while at the same time worrying about losing something they cherish.
