Let
George Shearing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally kiss goodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm

The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying

But as long as you love me so
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Overall Meaning

The song "Let It Snow" by George Shearing is an ode to winter and the feelings it brings out. The song starts with the description of a frightful weather outside and the warmth of the fire inside. The persona in the song confesses that they have nowhere to go, and thus, they can only let the snow fall outside while they stay cozy inside. The next verse intensifies the feeling of staying in for the winter by buying some corn for popping and turning the lights down low, setting the mood for winter nights inside.

The next stanza is a confession of love and romantic attachment. The persona mentions that they would hate to go out in the storm after finally kissing their partner goodnight. However, if their partner holds them tight all the way home, they would feel warm despite the cold outside. The last stanza is a depiction of reality setting in. The fire is slowly dying, and the two lovers are still saying goodbye. However, the persona understands that as long as their partner loves them, they can let it snow outside, and they will still be warm and happy inside.

"Let There Be Love"

Let there be you,
Let there be me.
Let there be oysters
Under the sea.

Let there be wind,
An occasional rain.
Chile con carne,
Sparkling champagne

Let there be birds
To sing in the trees,
Someone to bless me
Whenever I sneeze.

Let there be cuckoos,
A lark and a dove,
But first of all, please
Let there be love.

[Interlude]

Let there be cuckoos,
A lark and a dove,
But first of all, please
Let there be love...

Hmmm umm...love
Hmmm umm...love

Let there be love.

Had this album during my last 3 years of college. With extreme insomnia, I used this album to fall asleep at night.

How cool is that intro before Nat starts to sing. Does it for me.

What a great pairing. Just superb. The velvety voice of Nat King Cole and the elegant playing of George Shearing.

@althejazz

As well as being a great singer Nat Cole was also a great pianist too. It would have been the icing on the cake to have these two playing piano together.
