I'll Be Around
George Shearing Quintet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be around,
No matter how
You treat me now
I'll be around from now on.
Your latest love
Can never last,
And when its past,
I'll be around when he's gone
Good-bye again,
And if you find a love like mine
Just now and then,

Oh drop a line to say you ?re feeling fine
And when things go wrong
Perhaps you'll see
You're meant for me

So I'll be around when he's gone.
Good-bye again,
And if you find a love like mine
Just now and then,

Oh drop a line to say your feeling fine
And when things go wrong
Perhaps you'll see
You're meant for me

So I'll be around when he's gone.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I'll Be Around" by George Shearing Quintet convey a message of unrequited love and the singer's unwavering commitment to their beloved, no matter how they are treated. The song is a gentle plea to the singer's love interest to recognize their true feelings and return to them when their latest fling inevitably falls apart.

The opening lines of the song set the tone for the rest of the lyrics: "I'll be around, no matter how you treat me now." This captures the singer's determination to remain faithful and committed, even in the face of rejection or indifference. The chorus repeats this sentiment twice, emphasizing the singer's steadfastness and willingness to wait for their love to return.

The second verse speaks to the fleeting nature of love and the singer's confidence that their love interest's latest relationship will not last. The phrase "Your latest love can never last" suggests that this is a pattern the singer has observed before and that they anticipate the relationship's eventual demise. The final lines of the verse, "I'll be around when he's gone," underscore the singer's enduring commitment and willingness to wait for their love to come back to them.

The final verse is both a goodbye and a promise. The singer acknowledges that their love interest may find someone else, but urges them to "drop a line to say you're feeling fine" if they do. The final two lines, "Perhaps you'll see you're meant for me / So I'll be around when he's gone," reinforce the idea that the singer's love is genuine and that they believe their love interest will eventually come to realize it.

Overall, the lyrics of "I'll Be Around" are a touching tribute to unrequited love and the singer's unwavering devotion. The song's gentle melody and romantic lyrics have made it a popular choice for jazz musicians and vocalists.

One of my happiest moments in 1962, when I just had immmigrated from Germany to California, turned out to be an evening at the San Francisco 'Blackhawk' with HIM and the Quintet on stage. Jack Kerouac wrote in "On the Road": "He was our God". So he was mine and still is. When he left us and became immortal, a piece of my very personal musical universe left with him. Thank you for your wonderful upload, bobjazz11 !

Noisyfan, thank you for mentioning 'Blackhawk' in San Francisco. I was there in 1957 at 'Treasure Island' being discharged from the military when I saw Dave Brubeck there. Great memories back when I was 21 year old. Thanks again.

This Alec Wilder tune is 70 years at least. Great melody and lovely lyrics.  Shearing had it all going, way back when. Thanks, Bob.

This takes me back to his old "MGM" days, when I bought my first shellac disc. and I've been listening to this guy for 55 years! The flip side to this was "As Long as there's Music". Play on George - play on.
