Check Yes Or No
George Strait Lyrics

It started way back in third grade
I used to sit beside Emmylou Hayes
A pink dress, a matching bow in her ponytail
She kissed me on the school bus but told me not to tell
Next day I chased her 'round the playground
'Cross the monkey bars to the merry-go-round
And Emmylou got caught passing me a note
Before the teacher took it I read what she wrote

"Do you love me? Do you wanna be my friend?
And if you do
Well then don't be afraid to take me by the hand
If you want to
I think this is how love goes
Check yes or no"

Now we're grown up and she's my wife
Still like two kids with stars in our eyes
Ain't much changed, I still chase Emmylou
Up and down the hall, around the bed in our room

Last night I took her out in a white limousine
Twenty years together she still gets to me
Can't believe it's been that long ago
When we got started with just a little note

"Do you love me? Do you wanna be my friend?
And if you do
Well then don't be afraid to take me by the hand
If you want to
I think this is how love goes
Check yes or no"

"Do you love me? Do you wanna be my friend?
And if you do
Well then don't be afraid to take me by the hand
If you want to
I think this is how love goes
Check yes or no"

Overall Meaning

George Strait’s song Check Yes Or No tells the story of a love that started in third grade and has grown into a lifelong partnership filled with love and joy. He reminisces about the moments he shared with Emmylou Hayes, his childhood crush. She would talk to him, sit next to him on the school bus, and pass notes to him. The chorus focuses on the question Emmylou asked him in the note. She asked him whether he loved her and whether he wanted to be her friend. George Strait then reflects on how love works by emphasizing that when you find the right person, you don't have to worry or overthink it. You simply take their hand and say yes.

As the song progresses, George Strait and Emmylou Hayes had grown up and are now married, but they still have the same level of affection and interest in each other that they had in third grade. They still play around the house and chase each other in a playful manner. George Strait takes his wife out in a "white limousine" to celebrate their anniversary, highlighting their love story.

Overall, Check Yes Or No is a sweet love song about a long-lasting relationship that began with childhood infatuation and has grown into something deeper and more profound. It shows how true love can begin at a young age and continue to blossom into something beautiful and lasting.

I know that no one cares, but my grandma recently died. we were very close. every time she would pick me up from school when I was a kid this song would play on the radio. I could tell she loved it because every time, her face would light up. my fondest memory is singing this with my grandma on the way to her house after a long day of school. I love and miss you granmda Sandy❤
