We Three Kings
George Strait Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign

O Star of wonder, Star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising, all men raising
Worship Him, God most high

Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Earth to heaven replies

O Star of wonder, Star of night
Star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of We Three Kings tell the story of the journey of the three wise men or Magi to the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem. The Magi, who were believed to have come from the East, are found traversing far fields and mountains and following a bright star that leads them to the Christ child. The lyrics start by introducing the three kings, who are going to give their gifts to the new-born king.

In the second verse, the lyrics mention the purpose of the Magiโ€™s journey - to pay homage to the newborn king with gifts, which the first wise man brings gold to symbolize kingship. The second wise man brings frankincense, which is an aromatic gum resin that was commonly used in religious worship at the time, to symbolize divinity. The third wise man brings myrrh, which was used in embalming, and is symbolic of the sacrifice that Jesus would make on the cross.

The third verse focuses on the star that the Magi follow, which is described as "Star of wonder, Star of night, Star with royal beauty bright". The star acts as a guiding light that leads the Magi to the Christ child. The final verse tells of the glorious moment when the wise men reach their destination, where they behold the newborn king, and recognize him as both a king and God. The hymn closes with the refrain of the Star of Wonder and its bright royal beauty guiding us to the light of God.
