Sister
George and Marguerite Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey sister, why are you so far from me?
What are all these pictures in my hand?
Why are they living among the dead, not the living?
When will they all learn to sing again
'Cause I thought I saw you pass
On the road out of stained glass
Why won't you bother me?
Why won't you bother me?

Hey brother, when did you stop calling me?
I wish that I could hear your voice again, yeah
But it's not that I'm alone
I'm just waiting by the phone
Why won't you bother me?
Why won't you bother me?

'Cause I thought I saw your face
On the television frame
Oh yes, I thought I saw you pass
On the road out of stained glass
Why won't you bother me?
Why won't you bother me?

Oh, yes, I thought I saw your face
On the television frame
Oh yes, I thought I saw you pass
On the road out of stained glass

Why won't you bother me?
Why won't you bother me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to George and Marguerite's song "Sister" depict a sense of longing and confusion in the relationship between siblings. The singer, addressed as "sister," questions why she feels so distant from her sibling. The line "Why are you so far from me?" conveys a physical and emotional distance that has grown between them. The mention of pictures in the singer's hand refers to memories or reminders of their past together. However, these memories seem to be disconnected from the present reality, as they are "living among the dead, not the living." This suggests that the relationship between the siblings has deteriorated, and their connection feels lifeless.

The singer wonders when and if their siblings will "learn to sing again," signifying a desire for meaningful communication and a restoration of their bond. The repetition of the line "Why won't you bother me?" reflects the singer's frustration at the lack of attention or effort from their sibling. They long to feel seen, heard, and valued by their sibling, but it seems that their pleas go unanswered.

In the second verse, the perspective shifts to the brother, who is also experiencing a sense of loss in their relationship. The brother reflects on the absence of communication, wishing to hear his sister's voice again. The mention of waiting by the phone indicates a longing for connection and a yearning for their sibling's presence. Despite being surrounded by people, the brother feels alone because he is missing that vital connection with his sister.

The chorus repeats the imagery of seeing the sibling's face, first on a television frame and then on the road out of stained glass. These images symbolize the glimpses of their sister that the singer catches, perhaps through media or distant encounters, which only intensifies their desire for closer connection. Ultimately, the song emphasizes the frustration, confusion, and longing that exist within the strained relationship between the siblings.

This is a very kindly documentary. Whoever has produced it, has related the facts with compassion. That Margaret died at 71 and the Queen lived to 96 shows that the Queen led a life of healthy habits. Her sister did not. And the Queen always had the support of her husband, and Margaret did not, sadly.

Her sister was tormented by her “2nd” position life. She was not unlike Harry.

@ksbESQMargret put duty above love. I don't think she was anything like hazbeen

@Kez C Margaret’s # 2 spot drove her bat shit crazy! She didn’t put duty before love; she was told who she could and could not merry! The rules changed and the Queen gave Harry and Meghan her blessing; so, just stop!

@ksbESQ - Well, in a sense she did put duty before love. She could have married Townsend, but she would lose all her royal privileges. She chose not to wed him.
Being #2 must be difficult, Prince Albert suffered as #2 to Edward VIII, Prince Andrew acted out with Charles as the Heir, and now Harry going bonkers. In reality, they should have been thrilled to have that life with relatively none of the stress.
Margaret drank and smoked too much. She damaged her health. I think the smoking did more damage than the drinking.

Elizabeth II was exceptional, rarely made mistakes she couldn’t recover from or learn from. She truly embraced her role and she did dedicate her life to service, a life well lived.

Her very big mistake was refusing to allow Charles and Camilla to marry, forcing Charles into a loveless marriage with a very young, innocent girl.

@Sheila Bloom
Yes, I agree but other than that she really did her best to follow the rules of her duty as queen of England. She really did her best.

Cuhnievel

@Sheila BloomI think her biggest mistake was getting smashed by her cousin and marrying him
