During the 1980s and early 1990s, Levert scored big hits with "Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop (Goes My Mind)", "Casanova", and "ABC-123" (not to be confused with the Jackson Five hit of the same name). As a solo artist, Gerald's hits included "I'd Give Anything (to Fall in Love)", "You Got That Love", and "Mr. Too Damn Good to You".
Gerald and Eddie collaborated together on many different occasions, and they recorded an album called Father and Son together.
Gerald Levert also sang the chorus on the Chris Rock spoken-word comedy piece, "No Sex (In the Champagne Room)".
In 2005, Levert's daughter Carlysia was featured on an episode of MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen.
Levert passed away due to an apparent heart attack on November 10, 2006. Sister 2 Sister magazine reported that Gerald and his father had just returned from a 10-day trip to South Africa where they had met with Nelson Mandela and were treated like royalty. Upon Gerald's return, he was excited about his upcoming album, which is due early in 2007. Gerald died in his sleep.
Lay You Down

You say some things that you really don't mean
Last night I've said some things that I know cut like a knife
You try to cut me back, I just want all of this to stop
I wanna kiss and make up
Sugar, I want you to know that
I didn't mean a thing that I said last night
You didn't mean those things you said about me last night
So let stuff of the past be the past
Don't go to sleep being mad
On the couch, on the floor, take my hand
Let's be lovers, not fighters no more
If I lay you down, would that make it alright
Make it alright, make it alright?
If I lay you down, would we still be friends?
Make it alright
Sugar, sugar, sugar, sugar
The best thing about bein' in love
Is the kissin' and makin' love, yeah, yeah
So let 'em drop to the floor
You know where I'm about to go
And if you feel the urge
Then, baby, you can go first
So let the past be the past
Don't go to sleep being in mad
On the couch, on the floor, take my hand
Let's be lovers, not fighters no more
If I lay you down, will that make it alright
Make it alright, make it alright?
If I lay you down, can we still be friends?
Make it alright
If I lay you down, will that make it alright
Make it alright, make it alright?
If I lay you down, can we still be friends?
Make it alright
I wanna lay you down
I wanna lay you down
I wanna lay you down
The lyrics to Gerald Levert's song "Lay You Down" appear to be a conversation between two people who had an argument and said hurtful things to each other. The opening verse suggests that in the heat of an argument, one may say things they do not mean, and the singer acknowledges that they may have hurt the other person with their words. The chorus then follows, where the singer asks if laying the other person down would make things alright. It is unclear what "laying down" entails in this context, but it could suggest being intimate or vulnerable with each other.
The second verse is the other person's response, reassuring the singer that they did not mean the things they said either, and that they can move past it. The bridge advises them to let the past be the past and not go to sleep while still angry, suggesting they need to make up before going to bed at night. The song then ends with the repetition of the chorus, with the singer expressing their desire to lay the other person down.
Overall, the lyrics of "Lay You Down" appear to be about resolving a conflict between two people who care for each other through open communication, intimate connection, and forgiveness. The song seems to convey a sense of desperation to reconcile and make things right, and the desire for physical intimacy suggests that the relationship might be romantic or sexual.

You know sometimes in the heat of the moment
At times, when emotions are high and the situation is intense,
You say some things that you really don't mean
You speak words that you do not truly intend to express
Last night I've said some things that I know cut like a knife
I spoke hurtful words last night that inflicted pain
You try to cut me back, I just want all of this to stop
You attempted to hurt me back, but I want the situation to end
I wanna kiss and make up
I want to express love and reconcile our differences
Sugar, I want you to know that
My dear, I need you to understand that
I didn't mean a thing that I said last night
The words I spoke were empty and meaningless
And baby, deep inside I know
And my love, internally, I am aware that
You didn't mean those things you said about me last night
You did not intend to express those hurtful things about me
So let stuff of the past be the past
Therefore, let us leave the past behind us
Don't go to sleep being mad
Do not retire for the night angry and upset
On the couch, on the floor, take my hand
Sit with me on the couch or the floor and hold my hand
Let's be lovers, not fighters no more
Let us choose to be lovers and not adversaries from now on
If I lay you down, would that make it alright
If we engage in intimacy, will it resolve our issues
Make it alright, make it alright?
Will it be sufficient to put everything behind us
If I lay you down, would we still be friends?
If we are intimate, will that hinder our friendship
Sugar, sugar, sugar, sugar
My love, my sweet, my dear, my darling
The best thing about bein' in love
The most wonderful part of experiencing love is

If you also possess the desire
Then, baby, you can go first
