He played in many bands in the West Cork area, one of the most successful being a band called
"SOUTHERN COMFORT". That bands lineup was : John (The Father ) Larkin ( Alto Sax, Clarinet, Accordion ), Jerry Larkin ( Bass Guitar ), Jimmy Hayes ( Drums / Vocals ) and Gerry Lane ( Guitar / Vocals ). While in that band he came into contact with Noel Redding ( Ex Bass player with the Jimi Hendrix Experience ). Gerry and Noel played together in various bands around Southern Ireland. " I enjoyed my time working with Noel, he was a great person and I learned a lot from him.
During the late 70's Gerry played the showband circuit in Ireland and England where he had to play all different styles of music from Country, Pop and Reagge to Blues, Soul and Rock n Roll.
It was a great breeding ground for musicians. Some of Irelands better known stars started their careers on the showband stage : Rory Gallagher ( The Fontana Showband ) and
Van Morrison ( Them ) to name but two.
In 1980 Gerry formed a band called " DRIVESHAFT ". With that band he toured extensively in Ireland and England playing their own headline gigs in venues like SFX Center ( Dublin ), City Hall ( Cork ), Kings Hall ( Belfast ), Marquee Club ( London ), Hippodrome ( London ) and also supporting visiting international acts like : " Rory Gallagher " ( also from Cork Ireland ), " Phil Lynotts Grand Slam " ZZ Top ",
Def Leppard", " Saxon ", " Micheal Schenker ".
In 1983 Gerry moved to England. While living in London he got to work and record with a lot of big names in the music business, e.g. Gary Moore ( also from Ireland ), Cozy Powell ( ex Rainbow / Whitesnake / Jeff Beck / Black Sabbath ) , Neil Murray ( ex Bass player with Whitesnake / Brian May Band ), John Sinclair ( Keyboard player with Ozzy Osbourne / Uriah Heep ).
In 1992 Gerry had two of his songs placed on Cozy Powells solo album " THE DRUMS ARE BACK".
He also sang and played guitar on both of those tracks. Other musicians on the album were :
Brian May ( Queen ), Jon Lord ( Deep Purple ), Steve Lukater ( Toto ), John Sinclair
( Ozzy Osbourne / Uriah Heep ), Billy Sheehan ( Bass player with Mr Big and Steve Vai ).
In 1993 Gerry moved to the Canary Islands ( Gran Canaria ) where he now lives and works.

Long Way Home
Gerry Lane Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sitting here in the cool moonlight,
I see you walking on the boulevard.
I thought I had it figured out,
Didn't know what it was all about,
And then you slipped inside my guard.
And if we ever take the time.
Will it still feel like a crime... to you and I?
Long way home.
Don't have to make it on your own.
Just take my hand cause baby it's a,
Long way home.
I wonder where you're going to be,
And if you'll ever think of me.
Will things ever be the same.
Ain't it funny how things work out,
I guess it's something we should think about,
But I would never change a thing.
And if we ever take the time.
Hey, Will it still feel like a crime... to you and I?
And when the lovin' hurts... will it feel like it's a
Long way home.
Don't have to make it on your own.
Take my hand cause baby it's a,
Long way home.
It's a long way home,
Yeah, We've crossed the danger zone,
Close your eyes cause baby it's a,
Long way home.
And if we ever take the time.
Will it still feel like a crime... to you and I?
And when the lovin' hurts... will it feel like it's a
Long way home.
Don't have to make it on your own.
Just take my hand cause baby it's a,
Long way home.
It's a long way home,
Yeah, We've crossed the danger zone,
Close your eyes cause baby it's a,
Long way home.
Just another… lonely night.
Take my hand, baby it's a
Long way home.
The End.
The lyrics to Gerry Lane's "Long Way Home" describe the thoughts of someone who is reflecting on their relationship with another person. They are sitting alone in the moonlight and see the other person walking on the boulevard. They had thought they had everything figured out, but then the other person came into their life and "slipped inside their guard." The singer wonders if it will ever feel like a crime to be with this person, and if the pain of being together will feel like a long way home. Despite this, they urge the other person to take their hand and journey with them, even though they're unsure where they're going to end up.
The song seems to be about the complexities of love and relationships, how we can never really know what we're getting into when we fall deeply for someone. It touches on the vulnerability and risk that comes with opening yourself up to love, and how it can feel like a long journey even when you have someone else to share it with.
