I Want To Know
Ghost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fall to my death in this conversation
I’m never coming round again
Because I know what you want from me
I know what you want from me

Get a real job
Get a God
Get a nice boy to marry you
Oh yeah, I know what you want from me

Watch my friends getting married don’t worry I’ll MC your wedding
And then I’ll sit down again
We can all pretend that these men aren’t trying to kill us
They’re trying to kill us
Pretend that my love looks just like the other ones
Just like the boys and the girls on the TV
That I’m free to kiss in the street
In the rain, in the dark
While the taxi waits for me

My friends they talk to one another
‘Bout how I go from lover to lover
Because we all saw the look of our mothers’
When we told them we’d never be marrying boys
Now we’re waiting for the same look to cross
The face of the girls that we hold in the nighttime
And we try but we never connect
We never connect
We never connect
We never connect
(We) I know what you want from me
I know what you want from me
I know what you want from me

I know what you want from me
I know what you want from me
I know what you want from me

Watch my friends getting married (I know what you want from me)
Don’t worry I’ll MC your wedding (I know what you want from me)
And then I’ll sit down again (I know what you want from me)
We can all pretend that these men aren’t trying to kill us
They’re trying to kill us
Pretend that my love (I know what you want from me)
Looks just like the other one
Just like the other one (I know what you want from me)
Just like the other one (I know what you want from me)
What’s it like to kiss in the street
In the rain, In the dark
While the taxi waits

My friends they talk to one another (I know what you want from me)
‘Bout how I go from lover to lover (I know what you want from me)
Because we all saw the look of our mothers’ (I know what you want from me)
When we told them we’d never be marrying boys
(I know what you want from me)
We’ll never be marrying boys (I know what you want from me)
(I know what you want from me) We’ll never be marrying boys
(I know what you want from me) We’ll never be marrying boys
But I don’t behave myself
I won’t behave myself
I won’t behave myself
I won’t behave myself
And I won’t hate myself
I won’t hate myself

I won’t hate myself
I won’t hate myself

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ghost's song "I Want To Know" touch on themes of societal expectations, personal freedom, and the struggle for self-acceptance. The artist expresses a sense of defiance and rebellion against the pressure to conform and fulfill certain roles and expectations.

The lyrics start with the declaration of falling to one's own demise in a conversation, symbolizing the feeling of being isolated and detached from societal norms. The singer acknowledges the knowledge of what others want from them, possibly referring to the pressure to conform to societal norms like having a "real job" or getting married to a man. This pressure is portrayed as suffocating and restrictive.

The second verse delves into the idea of trying to fit in, pretending to be like everyone else and conforming to a predetermined idea of love and relationships. The singer admits to witnessing their friends getting married, but asserts that they will never conform to society's expectations of marrying boys. They are aware of the disapproval that may come from others, as they reference the look of disbelief and disappointment on their mothers' faces when they declared they would not marry boys.

Throughout the song, there is a sense of yearning for personal freedom and the ability to express love openly. The mention of kissing in the street, in the rain, in the dark, while the taxi waits, highlights the desire for authenticity and the ability to express love without fear or judgment.

In the final repetition of the chorus, the artist affirms their refusal to conform and their determination to not hate themselves for deviating from societal expectations. This can be interpreted as a powerful statement of self-acceptance and embracing one's true identity.

Overall, "I Want To Know" explores themes of societal pressures, personal freedom, and the struggle to defy expectations and find acceptance for one's true self.

Listening to this song in 2019 with the biggest grin on my face. In the 80's, when this man was pursuing me, the lyrics he used "I wanna' know what is ..." I told him to go listen to Ghost song. He won me over eventually. What happened? It was good while it lasted. I'm 60 yrs young now, aged quite gracefully- now he's singing "I've been working my way back to you, babe" Mr. Man, let me enjoy my twilight years in peace 😈
