Buona Sera
Gia Maione Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It is time to say goodnight to Napoli
Though it's hard for us to whisper, buona sera
With that old moon above the Meditteranean sea
In the mornin' signorina we'll go walkin'
When the mountains help the sun come into sight
And by the little jewelry shop we'll stop and linger
While I buy a wedding ring for your finger
In the meantime let me tell you that I love you
Buona sera, signorina kiss me goodnight
Buona sera, signorina kiss me goodnight
Buona sera, signorina, buona sera
It is time to say goodnight to Napoli
Though it's hard for us to whisper, buona sera
With that old moon above the Meditteranean sea
In the mornin' signorina we'll go walkin'
When the mountains help the sun come into sight
And by the little jewelry shop we'll stop and linger
While I buy a wedding ring for your finger
In the meantime let me tell you that I love you
Buona sera, signorina kiss me goodnight
By the little jewelry shop we'll stop and linger
While I buy a wedding ring for your finger
In the meantime let me tell you that I love you
Buona sera, signorina kiss me goodnight
Buona sera, signorina kiss me goodnight
Sera, signorina kiss me goodnight
The song Buona Sera by Gia Maione is a romantic tune that speaks of saying goodnight to Napoli and the Mediterranean Sea, making plans to walk in the morning when the sun rises, and buying a wedding ring for the singer’s lover. There is a sense of approaching excitement as the man in the song tells the woman that he loves her and asks for a goodnight kiss. The lyrics are timeless and evoke the sense of an eternal love story that never fades.
The song was originally written by Peter De Rose and Carl Sigman in 1957 as an instrumental piece titled “Buona Sera”. In 1958, Louis Prima added vocals to the song, with Maione providing additional background vocals. The song became a hit, and it is this version that most people are familiar with today.
Buona Sera has been featured in various films and television series, including The Godfather: Part III, The Sopranos, and Moonstruck. It has also been covered by various artists, such as Dean Martin and Bette Midler, and it remains an iconic and much-loved song today.

I SAW LOUIE & GIA DOING "BUONA SERA SIGNORINA," LIVE IN JUNE 1964, WHILE I WAS WORKING AT HARRAH'S LAKE TAHOE CASINO. MY CASHIER'S CHECK CASHING COUNTER WAS ONLY 40 FEET FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE STAGE. I HAD A CLEAR SHOT OF EVERYTHING, & I SAW SHOW AFTER SHOW FOR WEEKS. GIA WAS THE MOST NATURALLY SPACEY LADY EVER. YOU CAN'T MISS GIA'S BEAUTIFUL ITALIAN EYES SPACING OUT ON THE VIDEO. "BUONA SERA SIGNORINA" IS ALMOST IDENTICAL.
