Gil's showbiz career took-off in May 1997 when he was spotted in a Munich underground station by a talent scout for Bravo magazine and was asked to do a pictorial story spread. The article generated thousands of letters from fans and he landed a recording contract with BMG. His first single "Round 'N' Round (It Goes)" was released in November 1997 and became a Top 40 smash in Germany. His album Here I Am was released to international success in May 1998.[1]
After several other successful singles, Gil became disenchanted with being a teen idol. His 2003 release On My Own showcased his move in a different musical direction. Starting in 2005, Gil was the lead singer of Zoo Army. Zoo Army consisted of Gil, Tal (his brother), Roland Söns and Dominik Scholz. They released their first single "I'm Alive" and album 507 in the first half of 2006.
In 2010, Gil formed another band,"Acht" which focuses on a driving hard rock sound. Acht's debut album, "Stell dir vor," is entirely in German, reflecting a new domestic-marketing approach.
He is also active as an actor and played the part of Christoph in the Pro7-Production Endlich Sex! (Finally Sex!) in 2004 and Stefan Döbbelin in the TV two-part Sturmflut, Die (The Storm Tide) in 2006. His latest role is Max in the psycho-thriller Strip Mind which opened in Germany on January 3, 2007.
His Israeli father, Abi Ofarim, was a star in his own right, a folk artist, who had a group with his first wife Esther Ofarim. Gil's mother, Sandy, is Abi's third wife. Gil speaks German, Hebrew, and English. He sings in English and German.
Although Gil is virtually unknown in mainstream United States, he has an impressive underground fan following.
Get Off
Gil Ofarim Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And say what you want to say
I'm waiting
Is it me, is it you
Is it wrong, or is it true
I'm thinking
It's like a rats race for me to live
You never know how life is
There's nothing left for me to lose
Lights are off 'coz I chose my own way of thinking
Chorus:
Get off, get off
I know I'll find my own way
It's getting colder every day
Still don't know what to say
I'm freezing
Confidence is what they call a good thing
I don't think so
They are lying
When you really need someone they're all gone at once
Stop searching
Love is a losers game my friend
You have got no-one in the end
In the bitter, bitter, bitter end
Chorus (repeat)
In Gil Ofarim's song "Get Off," the lyrics tell the story of someone who is feeling lost and unsure about their place in life. They encourage the listener to take a deep breath and speak their truth, implying that they might be holding back their feelings. The singer is waiting for something, but they are not sure if it is themselves or someone else that they are waiting for. The lyrics suggest that the singer feels like they are in a "rat race" just to exist, and they are struggling with the uncertainty of life. In the chorus, the singer finds solace in the idea of finding their own way and breaking free from the uncertainties and negativity around them.
As the song continues, the lyrics describe the isolating feeling of being left alone when you need someone the most. The singer questions the idea of confidence being a good thing, emphasizing that people often lie and take advantage of others' vulnerability. The singer notes that love is a "losers game" and no one is there for you in the end. The song portrays a sense of disillusionment with society and relationships, with the singer finding comfort in solitude and the idea of going one's own way.
Overall, "Get Off" is a poignant and relatable song about the search for personal truth and breaking away from the expectations of others. The lyrics express a sense of hopelessness and frustration, but also emphasize the importance of finding one's own path and letting go of negativity.
