They released only one album, The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp in 1968 by Deram Records.
In 2002 a second release came out, The Brondesbury Tapes, featuring various recordings throughout 1968, with the group augmented by Ian McDonald on saxophone and flute, and Judy Dyble on vocals.
Michael Giles, Fripp and McDonald went on to form the first King Crimson line-up, rounded out by bassist/vocalist Greg Lake and lyricist Peter Sinfield. Peter Giles would go on to appear on the second Crimson album In the Wake of Poseidon in 1970, and more recently joined with 21st Century Schizoid Band. Judy Dyble came from Fairport Convention and would go on to join Trader Horne.
She Is Loaded
Giles Giles & Fripp Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll fall in love if I try hard enough
Her kisses never get better
They just get wetter and wetter
I curse the day that I met her
But she is loaded
I threw her food on the lino
She hit me, felt like a rhino
But she is loaded
There was a time when she did (reign me content?)
How she used to keep it cool
She used to give me anything I wanted
'Til she won a football pool
Now she gives me hell
I'll sue her, try to make this stick
The fact that she is sadistic
My nose was straight 'til she kissed it
But she is loaded
There was a time when she did (reign me content?)
How she used to keep it cool
She used to give me anything I wanted
'Til she won a football pool
Now she gives me hell
Her kisses never get better
They just get wetter and wetter
I curse the day that I met her
But she is loaded
The lyrics to Giles Giles & Fripp's "She Is Loaded" tell the story of a man who falls in love with a woman who seems to possess a vast amount of wealth, hence the phrase "she is loaded". The character is torn between his feelings for her and the frustration he feels with her abusive behavior towards him. The reference to "that decimal stuff" could be interpreted as her having a lot of money, while the lines "Her kisses never get better, they just get wetter and wetter" may suggest a level of physical attraction that keeps the man coming back to her. The repeated line "I curse the day that I met her" highlights the ambivalent nature of his feelings towards her.
The song also hints at the changing dynamics between the two characters. The verse "There was a time when she did (reign me content?) / How she used to keep it cool / She used to give me anything I wanted / 'Til she won a football pool / Now she gives me hell" suggests that the woman may have changed after suddenly acquiring wealth; perhaps becoming more demanding and difficult to please. The man tries to fight back, but his efforts are largely in vain - "I'll sue her, try to make this stick / The fact that she is sadistic / My nose was straight 'til she kissed it".
Overall, the song's lyrics portray a complicated, dysfunctional relationship, with money and power shifting the balance of power between the two characters. The repeated refrain of "she is loaded" captures the sense of both awe and resentment felt by the man towards his wealthy partner.
