Flowers and Football Tops
Glasvegas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby
Why you not home yet
Baby it's getting late
I wish you would be home by now.
Door bell rings
Who could it be at this time
Police on my left and right
My son's not coming home tonight

Baby, they don't need to show
It's over, I know, I know
Baby, they don't need to show
Flowers and football tops, I know
Baby, baby, baby, why you?

No sweeping exits
No Hollywood endings
Flowers and football tops
Don't mean a thing.

My baby is six feet under
Just another number
My daughter without her brother

Baby, they don't need to show
It's over, I know
Baby, they don't need to show
Flowers and football tops, I know

My baby is gone

(You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are gray
I hope you noticed

How much I loved you
How could they take my sunshine away)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Glasvegas's song "Flowers and Football Tops" paint a heart-wrenching picture of a parent's worst nightmare. The opening lines of the song set a tone of longing and concern: "Baby, why you not home yet?" The repeated use of "baby" suggests a close relationship, perhaps between a parent and a child or a partner. As the song progresses, the tension builds with the arrival of the police and the devastating news that their child has died.

The line "No sweeping exits, no Hollywood endings" suggests that this loss is realistic and not sugar-coated, further emphasizing the raw emotions expressed in the song. The phrase "flowers and football tops" is repeated, initially as if to deny the reality of what has happened. It is a reference to the makeshift memorials that often crop up at the site of a sudden death, where flowers and sports jerseys are often left in tribute.

The final lines of the song are heart-breaking, with the singer mourning the loss of their "sunshine" – their child – and the realization that their loved one is gone forever. The song is a poignant reflection on grief and loss, and the honest expression of the pain that comes with such an experience.

To this day it brings a tear
Or two these animals were
Laughing and smirking away
In the high court rest in peace
Little man
My friend got attacked with

Hockey sticks they killed him
Because hes white and his
Partern was dark skinned
Think about him every day

It's definitely a scary time in the U.S.; however, it sounds like there's similar issues in G.B. as well. From what I read, the Kriss Donald story was barely covered from the news media...which is sad.

In the U.S. (and everywhere else), I believe any incidents of racism need to be reported--no matter who or what is involved. I think the issue were dealing with now, is every single racist incident being reported is of nonblacks against African Americans. While I believe they need to be shown to the public, I disagree with everybody's minds being made up before any of the evidence is revealed. IMO, I believe some of these incidents would've happened no matter what race the "victim" was. I think some involving the police were training issues where he/she panicked. Again, I'm not saying all, but I hate that everybody is so positive of what happened based on what the media portrays.

In my 35 years in this country, I've never seen such a racial divide....and it scares the $h!t out of me. These days, it looks like everybody has to pick a side...white, black, Mexican, Muslim, Republican, Democrat, etc.., no matter what the issue is, people have made up their minds before really knowing the situation.

It really sucks that the media can control so many minds when we all know they're all more interested in ratings and clicks. Just because they have an agenda doesn't mean we all have to as well.

I feel like I have to keep saying this cuz I've posted similar comments in the past, and some ppl get upset and think I'm saying racism doesn't exist and AAs are seeing things that aren't there. All I'm saying is to take each issue individually and base your opinion on facts...try and be objective instead of picking a side solely based on what you believe you're supposed to think. I know racism still exists in a big way...on all sides...however, we need to expose the legitimate cases, not every time somebody can spin it into something it isn't.

We also need to be responsible for our actions and not look to blame our troubles on somebody else. It's easier to cry racism, than to work at being successful in life. On the other side, it's easier to justify your beliefs based on your experiences and stereotypes, rather than getting to know, understand, and learn from people different from you.

Ok...time to get off my soapbox...this was much too long for a YouTube comment.

This band should have been global. The talent, lyrics and such smooth song transition alone is not only unique, but a beautiful orchestra. There is so much talent in Scotland.

I worked with Kriss Donald’s sister, Sam. Such an amazing woman. So full of life and wonderful energy, despite the pain she endures. Always think of her when I hear this song.
