Tenderly
Gleason Jackie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly
The trembling trees embraced the breeze tenderly
Then you and I came wandering by
And lost in a sigh were we

The shore was kissed by sea and mist tenderly
I can't forget how two hearts met breathlessly
Your arms opened wide and closed me inside
You took my lips, you took my love so tenderly

Overall Meaning

The song Tenderly by Gleason Jackie is a timeless classic that captures the essence of love at its purest form. The song describes how the evening breeze caressed the trees and how the trembling trees embraced the breeze tenderly. The lyrical displays are metaphorical expressions of how two people who were wandering around lost their selves in a sigh. These lines allude to the surrounding environment and nature, which affects and influences the love shared between two people. Gleason Jackie uses this metaphor to paint a vivid image of how the environment and nature can create a romantic atmosphere.

The second verse of the song talks about the shore being kissed by sea and mist tenderly, with an emphasis on how two hearts met breathlessly. The line emphasizes the chemistry and connection between two people. The verse concludes with how the lover opens his arms wide and closes the person they love inside, which depicts a moment of intense intimacy. The final verse- "You took my lips, You took my love so tenderly" portrays the love shared between two people as an act of possession, with the lover taking ownership of the heart and soul of their significant other.

After all these years, I have really come to appreciate the genius of Jackie Gleason: Comedian, actor, writer, composer and conductor.

@bryannepveu6807

And he never had any formal training, it was all there.

The Great One.

@mrlopez-pz7pu

@@bryannepveu6807 Gleason never arranged, much less composed, anything on his albums. The conductor/composer George Williams did. Gleason "conducted" the first few of the "mood music" albums this track originally came from, but after that he merely slapped his name on them. His input in these albums was minimal. Contrary to what one might see in movies and TV shows, one MUST be trained in music to be an arranger, even when it's as basic as what is heard here.

Jack Lawrence & Walter Gross produced this dreamy romantic ballad "Tenderly," with unique lyrics that addressed nature's beauty & romantic inclinations. Importantly, we must not forget this is about two young people in love. The multi talented Jackie Gleason's velvet soft dreamy arrangement with his superb orchestra, which included the incomparable Bobby Hackett's golden trumpet, elevated this musical episode to heavenly heights. To - little Miss Lounge. I hope you like my comments. Peter Farrar, the guy with the golden talent with words.

The first time I can remember this song was on a 130 foot Chris Craft yacht owned by Weldon Poole on Lake Ponchartrain. Bliss!
