Roots
Gledhill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got nothing, if you wanted, you could take it all in a moment,
just got the city, and how i love her so,
i remember, as you left me at the door,
well i won't wait here now, anymore

cause this is where i come from
this is where i survive
this is where i belong
this is where i'm alive
these are the homes i lived
these are the streets i ran
these are the friends i love
this is where i come from

Out in the park, thats where it starts,
thats where you made me in the dark,
in the shelter, under the sweltering sun,
we were one
no other, another time another place
just don't ask me now to leave this place

cause this is where i come from
this is where i survive
this is where i belong
this is where i'm alive
these are the homes i lived
these are the streets i ran
these are the friends i love
this is where i come from

cause this is where i come from
this is where i survive
this is where i belong
this is where i'm alive

cause this is where i come from
this is where i survive
this is where i belong
this is where i'm alive
these are the homes i lived
these are the streets i ran

these are the friends i love
this is where i come from

Overall Meaning

The song "Roots" by Gledhill is a nostalgic tribute to the place one hails from. The lyrics express the idea that no matter what the circumstances, the singer will always be fiercely proud of where they come from, and will always return there. The opening lines suggest a sense of vulnerability, as if the singer is acknowledging that their roots are all they have, and that they could lose everything else in a moment. However, this feeling is quickly replaced with a sense of fierce protectiveness over their hometown: the singer lists various elements of the place they call home, from the city to the parks to the streets to the friends.

The bridge of the song describes a specific moment in the singer's past, when they were with someone special in a park. The song implies that this moment was a pivotal one in the singer's life, and led them to feel such a strong connection to their hometown. Finally, the repetition of the chorus at the end of the song underscores the singer's unbreakable bond with their roots. The song is a heartfelt reminder of the importance of one's sense of home, and how it can shape one's identity and experience of the world.

Just listened to this song for the first time in years. The first time I heard this song was when the council used it on a promotional video - shows how good they are being selected to be on a government film (no that wasn't sarcastic). I went to uni in sheffield, then worked for the unim the worked for the council for the best part of ten years. Now I live in Manchester, and I don't love this city as much as I do Sheffield. Which is why I am so happy to see the city finally standing up and being proud again - The Moor looks great, Heart of the City 2 is really coming along. I love that city and I have a feeling at some point i will end up back there. Perhaps running my private counselling service from an apartment in Park Hill. Who knows!? But love this song and really strikes a chord with my heart strings. x
