The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
How Will I Know

There's a boy I know
He's the one I dream of, ooh
Looks into my eyes
Takes me to the clouds above, mm
Oh, I lose control (Ooh)
Can't seem to get enough, ahh (Get enough, ahh)
Tell me is it really love, ahh
Rachel:
How will I know? (Ooh, don't trust your feelings)
How will I know? (Know)
How will I know? (Ooh, love can be deceiving)
How will I know? (Know)
Santana, Kurt, Rachel and Mercedes:
How will I know if he really loves me?
I say a prayer with every heartbeat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you, 'cause you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me?
I try to phone but I'm too shy, can't speak
Falling in love is all bitter sweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?
Oh, wake me
Mercedes:
I'm shaking (Santana: Ooh)
I wish I had you near me now, ahh
All:
Said there's no
Mercedes:
Mistaking (Ooh)
What I feel is really love, ahh
Ooh, tell me
All:
If he loves me
If he loves me
If he loves me not (Santana: Ohh yeah)
If he loves me
If he loves me
If he loves me not
Rachel:
Ohh, how will I know?
Kurt, Mercedes, and Santana:
How will I know if he's thinking of me?
All:
I try to phone but I'm too shy, can't speak
Falling in love is all bitter sweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?
Kurt, Rachel and Santana (Mercedes):
(How will I know?) How will I know
If he really loves me (How will I know?)
I say a prayer (Hey, how will I know?)
With every heart beat, (How will I know?)
I fall in love (How will I know?)
Whenever we meet (How will I know?)
I'm asking you (How will I know?)
'Cause you know about these things
How will I know? (How will I know?)
The Glee Cast's cover of Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" encapsulates the classic feeling of infatuation and vulnerability that is central to most love stories. In the song, the singers (Mercedes, Rachel, Santana, Kurt) navigate the feeling of falling in love and question whether the other person feels the same way. The song revolves around the anxiety and uncertainty that come with falling in love. It is a contemplation of the feelings and uncertainties many people feel in the early stages of a relationship. The lyrics show the singers constantly questioning their feelings and seeking guidance from someone who might know more than they do. The song's melancholic tone reflects the shadows of finding love, questioning its truthfulness and coming to terms with the fact that things aren't always going to be perfect.
The song was released in 1985 by Whitney Houston and was one of her most successful hits, reaching number one in the US, UK, Canada, and several other countries. The song's memorable chorus, "How will I know?" reflects the central theme of the song – the struggle to identify and confirm genuine love. It is one of the most memorable pop songs of the 80s, and the Glee Cast adapts it without losing its emotional quality. The song employs the '80s synth-pop sound and heavy use of synth drums, which were common in the music of the time.
