The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
O-off-off-off with your head
D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
O-off-off-off with your head
Artie with Rachel: It's close to midnight
And something evil's lurking in the dark
You see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream
But terror takes the sound before you make it
(Santana: Heads will roll, heads will roll)
You start to freeze
As horror looks you right between the eyes
You're paralyzed
Artie with New Directions!: 'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
And no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike
You know it's thriller, thriller night
You're fighting for your life inside a killer thriller tonight
Rachel & Santana: Off with your head
D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
O-off-off-off with your head
D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
Santana: Ooh, you hear the door slam
And realize there's nowhere left to run
Uh, you'll feel the cold hand
And wonder if you'll ever see the sun
Artie with Rachel: You close your eyes
And hope that this is just imagination
(Santana: Heads will roll, heads will roll)
But all the while
You hear the creature creepin' up behind
You're out of time
Artie with New Directions!: Thriller, thriller night
There ain't no second chance against the thing with forty eyes, girl
Thriller, thriller night
You're fighting for your life inside a killer thriller tonight
Rachel & Santana: Off with your head
D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
O-off-off-off with your head
D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
Finn (Santana): Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y'all's neighborhood
And though you fight to stay alive (Off with your head)
Your body starts to shiver (Dance 'til you're dead)
For no mere mortal can resist (Heads will roll, heads will roll)
The evil of the thriller (Heads will roll on the floor)
Artie with New Directions!: 'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
Girl, I can thrill you more than any ghost could ever dare try
Thriller, thriller night
So let me hold you tight and share a killer thriller tonight
Rachel & Santana: Off with your head
D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
O-off-off-off with your head
D-dance-dance-dance 'til you're dead
O-off-off-off with your head
The song "Thriller / Heads Will Roll" is a rendition of Michael Jackson's hit song "Thriller" and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Heads Will Roll." The lyrics talk about an evil creature lurking in the dark and the fear it instills in people. The chorus talks about the importance of dancing until you die because, in the end, everyone will lose their head.
The opening lines are sung by Rachel and Santana, where they demand to take the heads of those who do not dance until they die. The next lines are sung by Artie and Rachel, setting up the story of the song. It's close to midnight, and something evil is lurking in the dark. The lyrics depict the feeling of terror, heart-stopping sight, trying to scream, freezing, and being paralyzed with horror.
The next verse is sung by Santana, where she describes the feeling of being trapped, feeling a cold hand, and wondering if she will ever see the sun. Artie and Rachel then sing about the importance of imagining that it's not real, but all the while, they can hear the creature creeping up behind them. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the importance of fighting for your life inside a killer thriller tonight.
The next part is sung by Finn, where he talks about the darkness falling across the land, creatures crawling in search of blood, and the evil that no mere mortal can resist. Artie and New Directions then sing about how they can thrill more than any ghost could ever dare to try. The chorus repeats one final time, and the song ends with Rachel and Santana's opening lines.
