House
Glen Burtnik Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When it's hot it's hot
Hotter than hell is supposed to be
When it's cold it's so cold
You can hardly see

I've been other places
None looked this good to me
Yeah, I'm right where I wanna be

Wanna live in my little red house
Wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree
Wanna live in my little red house
You come on my street, you answer to me
Whoa

And I got one big hurt I got in the war, for what it's worth
My father before me lived and died
For this piece of Earth

There goes my TV
Talk about a world of fear And I don't like what I hear
No

Wanna live in my little red house
Wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree
Wanna live in my little red house
You come on my street, you answer to me
Yeah

Wanna live in my little red house, my little red house
Wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree
Wanna live in my little red house
You come on my street, you answer to me

Hey, hey, whoa, whoa, hey, hey, whoa
Hey, hey, whoa, whoa, hey, hey

I'm right where I wanna be
Where nothing, nothing can hurt me
Whoa

Wanna live in my little red house
Wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree
Wanna live in my little red house
You walk this way, you talk to me

Wanna live in my little red house
Wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree
Wanna live in my little red house
You're gonna have to deal with me

Wanna live in my little red house, yeah
Wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree
Wanna live in my little red house
You don't wanna mess with me

Wanna live in my little red house
Wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree

Overall Meaning

The song "House" by Glen Burtnik talks about the beauty of home and the comfort it brings regardless of weather conditions or personal struggles. The opening lines describe the extreme weather conditions the singer experiences in their location, stating that when it's hot, it's hotter than hell, and when it's cold, it's nearly impossible to see. However, despite having been to other places, they find that none is as good as their current home, expressing satisfaction with being just where they want to be.

The chorus contains the singer's desire to live in their little red house, preferably in the shade of a towering tree. They assert their authority over their street, indicating that anyone who comes around will have to answer to them. The second verse refers to a significant injury the singer sustained during the war, but despite the pain, they believe that nothing can hurt them while they are in their little red house.

Overall, the song is a celebration of the concept of home as a haven and a source of strength, and the lyrics communicate a sense of contentment and security.

I cannot find the studio version of this song anywhere. Glen sounds great here, but I am so curious to hear what the original sounded like.

Back then he sounded very much like the vocal on "Follow You" (from his next record, Heroes & Zeroes). On this song, on the chorus he would go an octave up on the second line "wanna stay in the shade of a towering tree" - it was all very 80's synth pop, with TONS of reverb, the drums sounded like machines. The name of the album was "Talking in Code", and his name and the album name were stylized as GLENBURTNICK TALKINGINCODE. I can't find it anywhere either.
