Help Me Make It Through the Night
Glen Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take the ribbon from your hair
Shake it loose and let it fall
Layin' soft upon my skin
Like the shadows on the wall

Come and lay down by my side
Till the early mornin' light
All I'm takin' is your time
Help me make it through the night

I don't care who's right or wrong
I don't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow
Lord tonight I need a friend

Yesterday is dead and gone

And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Glen Campbell's song Help Me Make It Through The Night start with a request for the woman to take the ribbon off her hair and let it fall onto the skin of the singer, making it feel like the shadows on the wall. The shadows on the wall could be interpreted as a reference to the fleeting nature of life and how time disappears quickly, almost like the shadow fades away. The lyrics go on to ask the woman to lay down by his side until the morning light, as all he needs is her time to help him make it through the night.

The second paragraph of the lyrics goes on to talk about not caring who is right or wrong and not attempting to understand things too much. Instead, the lyrics take a turn towards accepting the future without worrying about it too much, as the singer is only looking for a friend to help him through the night. The last line of the lyrics expresses sadness at being alone, which could be seen as a direct consequence of the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of being alone at some point.
